The Space of Connections as the Arena for (Quantum) Gravity

open access: yesSymmetry, Integrability and Geometry: Methods and Applications, 2011
We review some properties of the space of connections as the natural arena for canonical (quantum) gravity, and compare to the case of the superspace of 3-metrics.

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

The Challenges of Environmental Protection in Outer Space Following Russia’s Anti-Satellite (ASAT) Weapon Test Activities

open access: yesYustisia
One of the effects of space activities is the creation of space debris that can endanger either the space environment or the Earth’s environment. In response to concerns regarding a swift escalation in space debris, Russia tested its Anti-Satellite (ASAT)

Applicability of mitotic figure counting by deep learning: a development and pan‐cancer validation study

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In this study, we developed a deep learning method for mitotic figure counting in H&E‐stained whole‐slide images and evaluated its prognostic impact in 13 external validation cohorts from seven different cancer types. Patients with more mitotic figures per mm2 had significantly worse patient outcome in all the studied cancer types except colorectal ...

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Interpretable visualizations of data spaces for classification problems

open access: yesMachine Learning: Science and Technology
Abstract How do classification models ‘see’ our data? Based on their success in delineating behaviors, there must be some lens through which it is easy to see the boundary between classes; however, our current set of visualization techniques makes this prospect difficult.

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.

Christian Love in the Community

open access: yesDiaconia, 2014
Framing a discussion of social space and the possibility of theological reflection and action, the article utilizes Moltmann, Nussbaum and Joost to argue that there is a space for God within social spaces.

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.
