Interspecific differences in growth, digestion, and feeding metabolism among freshwater fishes with different food habits

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Studies of interspecific differences in the physiological performance of animals and their relationship with metabolism may provide insight into how selection influences diversity in phenotypic traits. To investigate the effects of food habits on growth,

Long‐Term Elevated CO2 Improves Soil Health and Rice Yields in Paddy Fields

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Combining the two longest‐running rice free‐air CO2 enrichment experiments with a global data synthesis, this study demonstrates that long‐term elevated CO2 consistently enhances soil health. In rice paddies, this improvement sustains the CO2 fertilization effect over decades.

The diet of the lynx Lynx lynx in Norway

open access: yesFauna Norvegica, 1980
Stomach content analyses show that roe deer Capreolus capreolus and reindeer Rangifer tarandus constitute the most important food for the lynx Lynx lynx in Norway, particularly during winter. Other important prey items are hares and tetraonids. A change

Elaphostrongylus sp. (Nematoda, Protostrongylidae) and other helminths in faeces of moose (Alces alces (L.) in North Norway

open access: yesFauna Norvegica, 1983
Faecal samples collected from 103 moose (Alces alces) in Troms and Finnmark counties during the hunting season of September - October 1975 were examined. The faeces of all moose older than one year contained eggs or larvae of gastro-intestinal nematodes.

Effects of resource availability and interspecific interactions on Arctic and red foxes' winter use of ungulate carrion in the Fennoscandian low‐Arctic tundra

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
In the Arctic tundra, predators face recurrent periods of food scarcity and often turn to ungulate carcasses as an alternative food source. As important and localized resource patches, carrion promotes co‐occurrence of different individuals, and its use ...

Chemical Competition between Microscopic Stages of Macrocystis pyrifera and Five Native Kelp Species: Does Giant Kelp Always Lose? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera is often considered competitively dominant to other kelp species due to its high productivity. However, on the microscopic level, previous studies found that Macrocystis can be inferior to other kelp species through ...

Mechanisms of Surviving Burial: Dune Grass Interspecific Differences Drive Resource Allocation After Sand Deposition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Sand dunes are important geomorphic formations of coastal ecosystems that are critical in protecting human populations that live in coastal areas. Dune formation is driven by ecomorphodynamic interactions between vegetation and sediment deposition. While

Tropical tree height and crown allometries for the Barro Colorado Nature Monument, Panama: a comparison of alternative hierarchical models incorporating interspecific variation in relation to life history traits

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2019
. Tree allometric relationships are widely employed for estimating forest biomass and production and are basic building blocks of dynamic vegetation models.

Construction of a Multitissue Cell Atlas Reveals Cell‐Type‐Specific Regulation of Molecular and Complex Phenotypes in Pigs

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This research conducts an in‐depth investigation of cell‐type‐specific regulatory mechanisms underlying molecular and complex phenotypes through integrative analysis of multitissue single‐nucleus RNA sequencing, bulk RNA‐seq, and genome‐wide association study (GWAS) data in pigs.
