Hyperthermia, Intracellular Free Calcium and Calcium Ionophores
International Journal of Radiation Biology, 1993It is shown that heat-induced increase of intracellular calcium does not correlate with hyperthermic cell killing. Six different cell lines were investigated; in four (EAT, HeLa S3, L5178Y-R and L5178Y-S) heat treatments killing 90% of the cells did not affect the levels of intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i).

Cytoprotection and intracellular calcium
Journal of Physiology-Paris, 1999It seems that prostacyclin has an increasing effect on gastric mucosal (antral and fundic) calmodulin level in rats. Using either the calcium channel blocker verapamil or anti-calmodulin drugs (diazepam, trifluoperazine,) the cytoprotective effect of prostacyclin can be inhibited.

Annexins as intracellular calcium sensors
Cell Calcium, 2007The annexins are a multigene family of Ca(2+)- and charged phospholipid-binding proteins. Although they have been ascribed with diverse functions, there is no consensus about the role played by this family as a whole. We have mapped the Ca(2+)-induced translocations of four members of the annexin family and of two truncated annexins in live cells, and ...

Intracellular calcium regulation of connexin43
American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology, 2007The mechanism by which intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) regulates the permeability of gap junctions composed of connexin43 (Cx43) was investigated in HeLa cells stably transfected with this connexin. Extracellular addition of Ca2+ in the presence of the Ca2+ ionophore ionomycin produced a sustained elevation in [Ca2+]i that resulted in an ...

Sperm Intracellular Calcium Evaluation
The evaluation of the intracellular calcium is essential in studying sperm capacitation and acrosome reaction, among other processes. Here, we describe the use of chlortetracycline (CTC) to study Ca2+ distribution in relation to the sperm capacitation state, and the evaluation of Ca2+ levels in spermatozoa using a low or a high-affinity Ca2+ dye (Rhod ...Adriana, Casao +2 more

The intracellular distribution of calcium
Trends in Neurosciences, 1988Abstract For a long time, the study of calcium distribution in neurons was plagued by artifacts and technological problems. Major progress in the field has now been made using a variety of techniques, such as electronprobe X-ray microanalysis of unfixed, rapidly frozen sections, subcellular fractionation and cell permeabilization, and by recently ...

Revisiting intracellular calcium signaling semantics
Biochimie, 2011Cells use intracellular free calcium concentration changes for signaling. Signal encoding occurs through both spatial and temporal modulation of the free calcium concentration. The encoded message is detected by an ensemble of intracellular sensors forming the family of calcium-binding proteins (CaBPs) which must faithfully translate the message using ...

Intracellular Calcium Dynamics During Photolysis
Advances in Heat and Mass Transfer in Biotechnology, 1997Abstract The objective of this investigation was to gain a deeper understanding of the intracellular events which precede photolysis of cells. A model system, consisting of malignant melanoma cells pre-treated with the calcium sensitive fluorescent dye, Fluo-3, was used to examine the intracellular calcium dynamics in single-cell ...

Intracellular Calcium in Secondary Hypertension
Nephron, 1987In 13 essential hypertensives, 15 renal hypertensives, 16 patients with phaeochromocytoma, 6 patients with renal artery stenosis and in 21 normotensive controls the Ca2+ and K+ content in the asked material from red blood cells was determined by flame photometry. Furthermore, intracellular K+ concentration was measured in the haemolysate.

THE REGULATION OF INTRACELLULAR CALCIUM
Clinical Endocrinology, 1976Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the regulation of intracellular calcium. The chapter illustrates that Ca 2+ is uniquely important in the regulation of cell function because it acts as a “messenger” that coordinates a multiplicity of intracellular reactions. The processes listed are the targets for Ca 2+, and the delivery of Ca 2+ to these
