Associations Between Initial Glycated Hemoglobin at Diabetes Diagnosis, Longitudinal Changes and Medication Effects, and the Severity and Progression of Sight‐Threatening Diabetic Retinopathy

open access: yesThe Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision impairment in patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Awareness of risk factors is necessary to reduce or prevent harmful effects of DR such as irreversible vision loss, and to help ensure early treatment.

Early CRT monitoring using time-domain optical coherence tomography does not add to visual acuity for predicting visual loss in patients with central retinal vein occlusion treated with intravitreal ranibizumab:A secondary analysis of trial data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Our primary purpose was to assess the clinical (predictive) validity of central retinal thickness (CRT) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 1 week and 1 month after starting treatment with ranibizumab for central retinal vein occlusion.

Pharmacokinetics of Melphalan After Intravitreal Injection in a Rabbit Model

open access: yesJournal of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics, 2016
Purpose: Although widely used for vitreous seed control in retinoblastoma patients, currently there are no data on melphalan pharmacokinetics after intravitreal injections. Therefore, in this study, we characterized the ocular and systemic disposition of

Dynamic Retinal Pathology in Glaucoma Progression Revealed by High‐Resolution Functional Imaging in Vivo

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
In this work, we investigated the dynamic retinal pathology of glaucoma from onset to late stages through longitudinal in vivo high‐resolution imaging in a silicone oil‐induced ocular hypertension (SOHU) glaucoma mouse model. We developed an optimized adaptive optics two‐photon excitation fluorescence microscopy (AO‐TPEFM) technique for morphological ...

Efficacy and safety of prophylactic simultaneous intravitreal moxifloxacin injection with standard intravitreal anti-VEGF injection procedure in cases of cystoid macular edema and macular neovascularization

open access: yesBMC Ophthalmology
Background To investigate the safety and efficacy of prophylactic use of commercially available intravitreal moxifloxacin 0.5% (Vigamox) at the time of intravitreal anti-VEGF injection against post-injection infectious endophthalmitis.

AAV-mediated and pharmacological induction of Hsp70 expression stimulates survival of retinal ganglion cells following axonal injury. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We evaluated the effect of AAV2- and 17-AAG (17-N-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin)-mediated upregulation of Hsp70 expression on the survival of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) injured by optic nerve crush (ONC).

Three-Dimensional Transport Model for Intravitreal and Suprachoroidal Drug Injection

open access: yesInvestigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, 2018
Purpose Quantitative understanding of the transport of therapeutic macromolecules following intraocular injections is critical for the design of efficient strategies in treating eye diseases, such as neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration ...

Ex Vivo Evaluation of Poly(Solketal Acrylate) Nanoparticles for Intravitreal Drug Delivery to the Posterior Eye Segment

open access: yesMacromolecular Rapid Communications, EarlyView.
Nile Red‐loaded poly(solketal acrylate) nanoparticles enable fluorescence tracking and exhibit nontoxic profiles in retinal cells. Enhanced cellular uptake and deep retinal penetration after intravitreal injection highlight their excellent potential for targeted ocular drug delivery to the posterior segment of the eye.

Suprachoroidal and Subretinal Injections of AAV Using Transscleral Microneedles for Retinal Gene Delivery in Nonhuman Primates. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Retinal gene therapy using adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) is constrained by the mode of viral vector delivery. Intravitreal AAV injections are impeded by the internal limiting membrane barrier, while subretinal injections require invasive surgery and ...
