Magnetic nanostructures by adaptive twinning in strained epitaxial films

open access: yes, 2011
We exploit the intrinsic structural instability of the Fe70Pd30 magnetic shape memory alloy to obtain functional epitaxial films exhibiting a self-organized nanostructure. We demonstrate that coherent epitaxial straining by 54% is possible.

Intrinsic flame instabilities in combustors: Analytic description of a 1-D resonator model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The study is concerned with theoretical examination of thermo-acoustic instabilities in combustors and focuses on recently discovered ‘flame intrinsic modes’. These modes differ qualitatively from the acoustic modes in a combustor.

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve

A Chaotic State in the Transition From Single Toward Multiple Pulse for Soliton Fiber Lasers

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2020
High-order soliton in anomalous-dispersion ultrafast fiber lasers is rarely researched due to its intrinsic instability in dissipative systems. For the first time, we numerically demonstrate the ultrafast pulse in fiber lasers will deviate from the ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Modified Arthroscopic Volar Scapholunate Capsuloligamentous Repair in Chronic Severe but Reducible Volar Scapholunate Instability

open access: yesArthroscopy Techniques
The scapholunate complex is composed of the intrinsic scapholunate ligament and the surrounding extrinsic ligamentous system on the dorsal and volar sides of the wrist.

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

miR-181a initiates and perpetuates oncogenic transformation through the regulation of innate immune signaling

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
The majority of high grade serous ovarian cancers originate from fallopian tube secretory epithelial cells (FTSECs). Here the authors show that miR-181a drives oncogenic transformation in FTSECs through the cooperative inhibition of the tumor suppressor ...

Coiling Instabilities in Multilamellar Tubes

open access: yes, 2002
Myelin figures are densely packed stacks of coaxial cylindrical bilayers that are unstable to the formation of coils or double helices. These myelin figures appear to have no intrinsic chirality.

Detailed Structure and Dynamics in Particle-in-Cell Simulations of the Lunar Wake [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The solar wind plasma from the Sun interacts with the Moon, generating a wake structure behind it, since the Moon is to a good approximation an insulator, has no intrinsic magnetic field and a very thin atmosphere.
