Algebraic invariants of links and 3-manifolds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The goal of this thesis is to describe certain algebraic invariants of links, and try to modify them to obtain invariants of 3-manifolds. Racks and quandles are algebraic structures that were invented to give invariants of knots and links.

Black Phosphorus/Ferroelectric CuInP2S6 Heterostructures Empowering Nonvolatile Photonic Convolutional Computing

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The growing demands of artificial intelligence require new energy‐efficient and nonvolatile computing paradigms. To meet this challenge, we demonstrate a foundational device platform for optical fiber computing that targets the signal decay and power consumption bottlenecks of conventional systems.

Unnatural Wills: Inheritance Disputes and Inequality

open access: yesThe British Journal of Sociology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Within the conceptual frame of relational economic sociology, inheritance disputes are a canonical form of relational mismatch. But the social patterning of relational mismatches, and their various ties to inequality, remain murky. In this paper, I examine all known inheritance disputes in Dallas from 1895–1945 within their social context to ...

Four-manifolds, geometries and knots

open access: yes, 2022
The goal of this book is to characterize algebraically the closed 4-manifolds that fibre nontrivially or admit geometries in the sense of Thurston, or which are obtained by surgery on 2-knots, and to provide a reference for the topology of such manifolds

Not all Temperature Shocks are Alike: Disentangling Heat and High Temperature Shocks and Their Effects on Inflation in Australia

open access: yesEconomic Record, EarlyView.
We study the effects of heat and high temperature shocks on inflation in Australia using monthly, state‐level temperature anomaly data via two stages. In the first stage, we decompose temperature anomalies into orthogonal components using a structural vector autoregression with long‐run restrictions.

Vassiliev invariants of Legendrian, transverse, and framed knots in contact three-manifolds

open access: yes, 2003
We show that for a large class of contact three-manifolds the groups of Vassiliev invariants of Legendrian and of framed knots are canonically isomorphic. As a corollary, we obtain that the group of finite order Arnold's J+-type invariants of wave fronts

Register‐Efficient Linear‐Time Evaluation in the Bernstein Basis

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
Abstract We investigate the evaluation of points and derivatives of Bézier curves and surfaces on modern architectures, focusing on performance and guided by numerical error bounds. While the de Casteljau algorithm remains the reference for numerical robustness, its linear working‐set size imposes substantial register pressure on GPUs.

Limited elephant impacts on baobabs despite increasing elephant densities in a newly established protected area

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Researchers combined aerial and ground surveys to map baobab distribution and assess elephant herbivory impacts on baobabs across Karingani Game Reserve, Mozambique. Researchers found that aerial surveys were an effective tool for mapping baobabs and that baobabs were more likely to occur closer to permanent water, at lower elevations, and in areas ...

Measuring Frame Evolution: Smoothed Temporal Framing Trajectories in Complex Policy Debates

open access: yesJCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies, EarlyView.
Abstract The European Union faces long‐term governance challenges in contested domains, such as migration management, health data sharing, and facial recognition technology. Across these fields, political debates are shaped by shifting ways in which actors frame problems and solutions. Understanding how such framing contests evolve over time is crucial

Density‐Valued ARMA Models by Spline Mixtures

open access: yesJournal of Time Series Analysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper proposes a novel framework for modeling time series of probability density functions by extending autoregressive moving average (ARMA) models to density‐valued data. The method is based on a transformation approach, wherein each density function on a compact domain [0,1]d$$ {\left[0,1\right]}^d $$ is approximated by a B‐spline ...
