Surface nanostructuring of titanium alloy dental screws by 10 keV Ar+ irradiation

open access: yesResults in Surfaces and Interfaces
The influence of 10 keV Ar+ ion irradiation on the surface topography of Ti–6Al–4V dental screws was investigated. The surface facing the ion beam became uniformly covered with nanoprotrusions, the size of which increased with the ion fluence.

Effect of irradiation temperature and ion flux on electrical isolation of GaN

open access: yes, 2015
We study the evolution of sheet resistance of n-type GaN epilayers irradiated with MeV ¹H and ¹²C ions. Results show that both implantation temperature (varied from 77 up to 423 K) and ion beam flux affect the process of electrical isolation in the case ...

Investigation of ion induced bending mechanism for nanostructures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Ion induced bending is a promising controlled technique for manipulating nanoscale structures. However, the underlying mechanism of the process is not well understood.

Deterministic Detection of Single Ion Implantation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Focused ion beam implantation with high detection efficiencies will enable the rapid and scalable fabrication of advanced spin‐based technologies such as qubits. This work presents the detection efficiencies of a wide range of ions implanted into solid‐state hosts, with efficiencies of >90% recorded for ion species and substrate combinations of ...

Surface charging of thick porous water ice layers relevant for ion sputtering experiments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We use a laboratory facility to study the sputtering properties of centimeter-thick porous water ice subjected to the bombardment of ions and electrons to better understand the formation of exospheres of the icy moons of Jupiter.

Mutagenic effects of ion beam irradiation on rice

open access: yesBreeding Science, 2009
We investigated the usefulness of ion beams for mutation breeding in rice (Oryza sativa L.) by comparing the efficiency (i.e., the ratio of desirable mutations to plant damage such as lethality and sterility), mutation rate, spectrum, and optimum dose to that of gamma rays.

Time‐Dependent Oxidation and Scale Evolution of a Wrought Co/Ni‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows how a new wrought Co/Ni‐based superalloy resists oxidation at 800 ∘$^\circ$C. The oxide scale changes from rough, fast‐growing spinel to a dense, protective chromia–alumina layer. Atom probe analysis reveals tiny refractory‐rich bubbles at the interface that mark the transition to long‐term, diffusion‐controlled protection ...

Graft copolymerization of GMA and EDMA on PVDF to hydrophilic surface modification by electron beam irradiation

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Technology, 2020
This study was carried out to convert the hydrophobic characteristics of PVDF to hydrophilic. Poly(vinylidene fluorine) (PVDF) was grafted by electron beam irradiation and sulfonated.

Affecting the Properties of Copper–Graphene Electroconductive Composite by Severe Plastic Deformation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Copper‐based composites enhanced with carbon feature convenient mechanical properties and favorable electric conductivity. Processing via deformation and thermomechanical treatments can introduce advantageous microstructures further enhancing their performance. Herein, copper–graphene powder‐based composites are directly consolidated via rotary swaging

Hydrogen‐Assisted Fracture of Iron‐Based Fe–Ni–Al Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Principal relations and fracture mechanisms of single‐phase and precipitate‐strengthened Fe–Ni–Al alloys subjected to prior electrochemical hydrogen charging are identified. The mechanisms of hydrogen effect on strength and microhardness are discussed, including hydrogen‐induced increase in microhardness and the role of hydrogen in fracture behavior ...
