Ion channels and epilepsy [PDF]

open access: yesQJM, 2006
In order for cells to retain their integrity to water and yet permeate charged ions, the phospholipid cell membrane contains transmembrane proteins that allow the passage of specific ions from the interior of the cell to outside, and vice versa. There is a huge diversity of these ion channels.

Iron‐dependent lysosomal LDL oxidation induces the expression of scavenger receptor A in human THP‐1 monocytes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In human monocytic cells THP‐1, a limited uptake of native—not oxidized—LDL/VLDL induced expression of scavenger receptor A and cellular adhesion. Induction was inhibited by lysosomotropic (WR‐1065) and lipophilic (BHT) antioxidants and by siRNAs against ferritinophagy.

Angstrom Scale Ionic Memristors' Engineering with van der Waals Materials- A Route to Highly Tunable Memory States [PDF]

open access: yesACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces 2024, XXXX, XXX, XXX-XXX
Memristors that mimic brain functions are crucial for energy-efficient neuromorphic devices. Ion channels that emulate biological synapses are still in the early stages of development, especially the tunability of memory states. Here, we demonstrate that cations such as K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Al3+ intercalated in the interlayer spaces of vermiculite ...

Cancer as a channelopathy: ion channels and pumps in tumor development and progression

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2015
Increasing evidence suggests that ion channels and pumps not only regulate membrane potential, ion homeostasis, and electric signaling in excitable cells but also play important roles in cell proliferation, migration, apoptosis and differentiation ...

Cardiac Ion Channels [PDF]

open access: yesCirculation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology, 2009
The analysis of the molecular basis of the inherited cardiac arrhythmias has been the driving force behind the identification of the ion channels that generate the action potential. The genes encoding all the major ion channels have cloned and sequenced. The studies have revealed greater complexity than heretofore imagined.

Noise-assisted spike propagation in myelinated neurons

open access: yes, 2008
We consider noise-assisted spike propagation in myelinated axons within a multi-compartment stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley model. The noise originates from a finite number of ion channels in each node of Ranvier.

Evaluation of the effect of metal stents on dose perturbation in the carbon beam irradiation field

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, EarlyView.
Abstract Propose Carbon ion therapy is indicated for cases in which stents have been inserted, such as bile ducts, but the effect of metal stents on carbon ion therapy is unclear. In this study, the dose perturbation of carbon ion therapy caused by metallic bile duct stents was evaluated by dosimetry. Materials and methods Five different types of metal

Fast and selective fluoride ion conduction in sub-1-nanometer metal-organic framework channels

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Biological fluoride ion channels are sub-1-nanometer protein pores with ultrahigh F− conductivity and selectivity over other halogen ions. Developing synthetic F− channels with biological-level selectivity is highly desirable for ion separations such as ...

Monte Carlo modeling of radiation dose from radiation therapy with superficial x‐rays

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Superficial x‐rays (50–100 kVp) are used for treating non‐melanoma skin cancer and intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT). At these energies, the photoelectric effect significantly increases absorbed dose to bone compared to soft tissue.
