Electronic and atomic kinetics in solids irradiated with free-electron lasers or swift-heavy ions

open access: yes, 2015
In this brief review we discuss the transient processes in solids under irradiation with femtosecond X-ray free-electron-laser (FEL) pulses and swift-heavy ions (SHI).

Nanostructuring Graphene by Dense Electronic Excitation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The ability to manufacture tailored graphene nanostructures is a key factor to fully exploit its enormous technological potential. We have investigated nanostructures created in graphene by swift heavy ion induced folding.

DNA-PKcs inhibition sensitizes cancer cells to carbon-ion irradiation via telomere capping disruption. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Heavy-ion irradiation induces a higher frequency of DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) which must be properly repaired. Critical shortening of telomeres can trigger DNA damage responses such as DSBs.

Helium irradiation effects in polycrystalline Si, silica, and single crystal Si [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been used to investigate the effects of room temperature 6 keV helium ion irradiation of a thin (≈55 nm thick) tri-layer consisting of polycrystalline Si, silica, and single-crystal Si.

A Link between Neutron and Ion Irradiation Hardening for Stainless Austenitic and Ferritic-Martensitic Steels

open access: yesMetals
Radiation hardening is studied for stainless austenitic and ferritic-martensitic chromium steels after ion and neutron irradiation at various temperatures. Austenitic and ferritic-martensitic steels irradiated up to 30 dpa in various nuclear reactors and

Controlled Anisotropic Deformation of Ag Nanoparticles by Si Ion Irradiation

open access: yes, 2006
The shape and alignment of silver nanoparticles embedded in a glass matrix is controlled using silicon ion irradiation. Symmetric silver nanoparticles are transformed into anisotropic particles whose larger axis is along the ion beam.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Ion beam induced modification of exchange interaction and spin-orbit coupling in the Co$_2$FeSi Heusler compound

open access: yes, 2007
A Co$_2$FeSi (CFS) film with L2$_1$ structure was irradiated with different fluences of 30 keV Ga$^+$ ions. Structural modifications were subsequently studied using the longitudinal (LMOKE) and quadratic (QMOKE) magneto-optical Kerr effect.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.
