Entropy, Extropy and the Physical Driver of Irreversibility [PDF]

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Description of Complex Systems, 2012
We point out that the fundamental irreversibility of Nature requires the introduction of a suitable measure for the distance from equilibrium. We show that entropy, which is widely held to be such a measure, suffers from the problem that it does not have

A Link between Nano- and Classical Thermodynamics: Dissipation Analysis (The Entropy Generation Approach in Nano-Thermodynamics)

open access: yesEntropy, 2015
The interest in designing nanosystems is continuously growing. Engineers apply a great number of optimization methods to design macroscopic systems.

Prigogine and Pannenberg: Theological and Scientific Perspectives on Contingency and Irreversibility [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The author demonstrates how Nobel Laureate Ilya Prigogine\'s pioneering work on dissipative structures and non-equilibrium thermodynamics might be used to answer theological questions about contingency and irreversibility that theologian Wolfhart ...

Non-commutative geometry and irreversibility

open access: yes, 1997
A kinetics built upon $q$-calculus, the calculus of discrete dilatations, is shown to describe diffusion on a hierarchical lattice. The only observable on this ultrametric space is the "quasi-position" whose eigenvalues are the levels of the hierarchy ...

Movement Disorders in Aicardi–Goutières Syndrome and Response to Immunomodulation

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study characterizes movement disorders and treatment responses in seven children with Aicardi–Goutières syndrome (AGS). We retrospectively evaluated motor phenotypes, neuroimaging, and interferon signatures in patients treated with baricitinib or anifrolumab. Spasticity affected all patients, while dystonia was present in 4/7.

Thermodynamic Measure for Nonequilibrium Processes [PDF]

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Description of Complex Systems, 2007
One of the most fundamental laws of Nature is formulated by the Second Law of Thermodynamics. At present, in its usual formulation the central concept is entropy characterized in terms of equilibrium state variables.

The Effect of Thermal Radiation on Entropy Generation Due to Micro-Polar Fluid Flow Along a Wavy Surface

open access: yesEntropy, 2011
In this study, the effect of thermal radiation on micro-polar fluid flow over a wavy surface is studied. The optically thick limit approximation for the radiation flux is assumed. Prandtl’s transposition theorem is used to stretch the ordinary coordinate

Persistent Bilateral [18F]THK5351 and Migrating Unilateral [18F]FDG Uptake in Anti‐LGI1 Encephalitis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Anti–leucine‐rich glioma‐inactivated 1 encephalitis (LGI1‐E) can cause persistent cognitive deficits, but the mechanisms remain unclear. A 40‐year‐old woman with LGI1‐E presented with subacute cognitive deficits and showed mild left medial temporal lobe (MTL) swelling and fluid‐attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) hyperintensity on initial ...

Irreversibility and Action of the Heat Conduction Process

open access: yesEntropy, 2018
Irreversibility (that is, the “one-sidedness” of time) of a physical process can be characterized by using Lyapunov functions in the modern theory of stability.
