IS257-mediated cointegration in the evolution of a family of staphylococcal trimethoprim resistance plasmids [PDF]
Analyses of the Staphylococcus epidermidis multiresistance plasmids pSK697 and pSK818 have revealed them to be closely related to the trimethoprim resistance plasmid pSK639, also isolated from S. epidermidis. pSK697 and pSK818 were found to contain a cointegrated copy of a second plasmid related to the S.

Tigecycline is regarded as one of the few important last-resort antibiotics to treat complicated skin and intra-abdominal infections. Members of the genus Staphylococcus are zoonotic pathogens and pose a serious threat to public health.

PCR-based amplification of heterogeneous IS257-ileS2 junctions for molecular monitoring of high-level mupirocin resistance in staphylococci [PDF]
Plasmids encoding the ileS2 gene are responsible for the wide spread of high-level mupirocin resistance in staphylococci, and consequent clinical and epidemiological problems. We investigated the location of insertion sequence IS257 flanking ileS2 in different plasmids and developed a method for molecular typing of the IS257-ileS2 spacer regions.Nine ...

Pathogenic bacteria often carry large plasmids that contain multiple resistance genes; individually, these elements coselect for additional resistance genes that are genetically linked by the plasmid. In this short communication, we demonstrate increased triclosan resistance can be conjugatively transferred in Staphylococcus aureus.

Characterization of a New Variant of IS 257 That Has Displaced the Capsule Genes within Bovine Isolates of Staphylococcus aureus [PDF]
ABSTRACT Many bovine Staphylococcus aureus isolates from Argentina are nontypeable (NT), i.e., they do not produce serotype 5 or 8 capsular polysaccharides (CPs). Some of these NT strains have a deletion of the cap5 ( 8 ) gene cluster mediated by a variant of

An IS 257 -Derived Hybrid Promoter Directs Transcription of a tetA (K) Tetracycline Resistance Gene in the Staphylococcus aureus Chromosomal mec Region [PDF]
ABSTRACT Transcription of the tetA (K) tetracycline resistance determinant encoded by an IS 257 -flanked cointegrated copy of a pT181-like plasmid, located within the chromosomal mec region of a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

We recently showed that, in the absence of RecA-dependent homologous recombination, the Tnp26 transposase catalyzes cointegrate formation via a conservative reaction between two preexisting IS26, and this is strongly preferred over replicative ...

The insertion sequence IS26 plays a key role in disseminating antibiotic resistance genes in Gram-negative bacteria, forming regions containing more than one antibiotic resistance gene that are flanked by and interspersed with copies of IS26.
