Myocardial ischemic preconditioning and mitochondrial F1F0-ATPase activity

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, 2000
A short period of ischemia followed by reperfusion (ischemic preconditioning) is known to trigger mechanisms that contribute to the prevention of ATP depletion. In ischemic conditions, most of the ATP hydrolysis can be attributed to mitochondrial F1F0-ATPase (ATP synthase).

Ischemic preconditioning reduces neutrophil accumulation and myocardial apoptosis

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1999
This study tested the hypothesis that ischemic preconditioning (IP) inhibits myocardial apoptosis after a short period of ischemia and reperfusion. In 9 anesthetized dogs, the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery was occluded for 30 min and reperfused for 3 h (control), while in 9 others, LAD occlusion was preceded by 5 min of occlusion and 5 ...

Myocardial, neural and vascular aspects of ischemic preconditioning

Life Sciences, 1996
Ischemic preconditioning can be obtained with brief coronary occlusions. It has been studied in different animal species including dogs, pigs, rabbits and rats. The suggested duration of the occlusions ranges from four periods of 5 min, separated from each other by 5 min of reperfusion, to one period of 2.5 min. In addition to the reduction of the size

EFFECTIVENESS OF ISCHEMIC PRECONDITIONING ON LONG-TERM MYOCARDIAL PRESERVATION

Transplantation, 1998
This study was designed to assess whether the protective effect of ischemic preconditioning can be adapted for myocardium undergoing 6 hr of ischemia.Eighteen isolated rat hearts were perfused with oxygen-bicarbonated Krebs-Henseleit buffer in the Langendorff mode for 35 min (group A, controls) or perfused in the Langendorff apparatus for 20 min ...

Limitation of infarct size by myocardial ischemic preconditioning

Basic Research in Cardiology, 1996
Myocardial ischemic preconditioning (IP) has caught the attention and imagination of researchers throughout the world (7). And for good reason: the magnitude of protection against ischemic injury conferred by IP is tremendous, far surpassing that offered by past pharmacological therapies. Although the original description of IP focused on limitation of

Myocardial Serotonin during Ischemia under Conditions of Ischemic Preconditioning

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2014
We studied the dynamics of interstitial serotonin during local myocardial ischemia under conditions of ischemic preconditioning in Wistar rats. Ischemic preconditioning increased serotonin content in the dialysate (p=0.003). During 30-min ischemia, ischemic preconditioning delayed serotonin increase just before the 20th min of ischemia.

Near-infrared monitoring of myocardial oxygenation during ischemic preconditioning

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2000
Ischemic preconditioning has been advocated as a method of cardioprotection for minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass. This study was performed to estimate the cardioprotective effect of ischemic preconditioning before ischemia by examining the changes in myocardial tissue oxygenation and also to examine whether adenosine triphosphate ...

[Nitric oxide and myocardial ischemic preconditioning].

Journal de la Societe de biologie, 2001
Preconditioning is an endogenous mechanism of cardioprotection that develops secondary to a brief ischemia and a dramatic reduction in infarct size is observed when the myocardium undergoes a subsequent and long period of ischemia after the induction of preconditioning.

Ischemic Preconditioning and Apoptosis in Myocardial Ischemia

2003
An emerging body of evidence has now been accumulated to indicate the existance of a highly organized type of cell death, apoptosis, in the pathogenesis of a variety of cardiovascular diseases (30, 84). This process of cell death is a fundamentally important biological process that involves cell proliferation and differentiation to control tissue and ...
