Neuropeptides in the Control of the Islets of Langerhans
1983Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the functions of neuropeptides in the control of the islets of Langerhans. The pancreatic islets of Langerhans are the major regulatory centers involved in blood glucose homeostasis. Each consists of a complex of intimately linked endocrine cells capable of responding to a wide variety of metabolic, neural ...

Culture of the islets of Langerhans for transplantation
The Japanese Journal of Surgery, 1982The isolated islets of Langerhans are the most available donors for transplantation. As the preservation of the isolated islets is difficult, we attempted to keep these tissues viable by use of an organ culture. Islets of Langerhans from adult Wistar rats were isolated by a collagenase technique and cultured in air-CO2 (95-5%) incubator at 37 degrees C.

Multiple Transplantations of Islets of Langerhans
European Surgical Research, 2008In 6 diabetic rats about 1,000 isolated islets of Langerhans were transplanted into the liver with little effect on the uninsulinism and hyperglycemia. Subsequently, a second transplantation resulted in a decrease of blood sugar to normal and in a reversal of the loss in body weight. Finally, in animals who had reversed to diabetes again, a third islet

Imaging of the β-cells of the islets of Langerhans
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, 2012The major aim of this paper is to review the present status of the techniques for the non-invasive imaging and quantification of insulin-producing pancreatic islet β-cells. Emphasis is placed on both the expansion of prior work already considered in a prior review and novel achievements.

Effects of epicatechin on rat islets of Langerhans
Diabetes, 1984Plants containing epicatechin (a flavonoid) have been used to treat diabetes mellitus in Indian medicine. The present study reports effects of this compound on isolated islets of Langerhans. The flavonoid (1 mM) was found to increase insulin secretion from isolated rat islets of Langerhans in the presence of either 2 or 20 mM glucose, in static ...

THE ISLETS OF LANGERHANS IN PANCREATIC FIBROSIS
Pediatrics, 1958A survey is given of earlier views on the occurrence of diabetes and decreased glucose tolerance in cystic fibrosis of the pancreas, as well as on the structure of the islet tissue in this disease and in experimental fibrosis of the pancreas. Intravenous glucose tolerance tests were performed in three patients with cystic fibrosis.

Microtubule interactions in islets of Langerhans.
Hormone and metabolic research. Supplement series, 1980Morphologic and functional studies have implicated islet microtubules in the transport of the B-cell secretory product form the endoplasmic reticulum to the peripheral pool of secretory vesicles. The participation of the microtubular apparatus in the insulin release mechanism appears to be mediated through an increased rate of tubulin synthesis and of ...
