Exploitation of Aspergillus terreus for the Production of Natural Statins

open access: yesJournal of Fungi, 2016
The fungus Aspergillus (A.) terreus has dominated the biological production of the “blockbuster” drugs known as statins. The statins are a class of drugs that inhibit HMG-CoA reductase and lead to lower cholesterol production.

Can Acanthamoeba keratitis be properly diagnosed without culture in the real-world clinical microbiology laboratory?: a case report

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical Microbiology
Acanthamoeba species are ubiquitous, free-living organisms found in the environment. They can cause a sight-threatening cornea disease, termed Acanthamoeba keratitis, and are often misdiagnosed, causing delayed administration of the correct treatment ...

CSF cytokine, chemokine and injury biomarker profile of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) autoimmunity

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
Abstract Defining the CSF cytokine/chemokine and injury biomarker signature of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) autoimmunity can inform immunopathogenesis. CSF GFAP‐IgG‐positive samples (N = 98) were tested for 17 cytokines/chemokines, neurofilament light chain (NfL), and GFAP (ELLA, Bio‐Techne).

Global alignment for relation extraction in Microbiology [PDF]

open access: yesJunior Conference on Data Science and Engineering, Feb 2021, Orsay, France, 2021
We investigate a method to extract relations from texts based on global alignment and syntactic information. Combined with SVM, this method is shown to have a performance comparable or even better than LSTM on two RE tasks.

Amplification‐Free, Sequencing‐Free, Detection of Viral RNAs with Variant Specification by Discrete Nanocounting

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Integrating selective RNA shortcut, targeted gene isolation, and micro‐arrayed nanoimaging, the NanoPick‐array platform excels in detecting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) at just 60 copies µL−1 and accurately differentiating variants at the single‐nucleotide level. It ensures 100% accuracy for samples with cycle threshold (

Detection of Metallo-\b{eta}-Lactamases-Encoding Genes Among Clinical Isolates of Escherichia Coli in a Tertiary Care Hospital, Malaysia [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
The multidrug resistant Escherichia coli strains causes multiple clinical infections and has become a rising problem globally. The metallo-\b{eta}-lactamases encoding genes are very severe in gram-negative bacteria especially E. coli. This study was aimed to evaluate the prevalence of MBLs among the clinical isolates of E. coli. A total of 65 E.

Evidence-based Hand Hygiene. Can You Trust the Fluorescent-based Assessment Methods? [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Healthcare-Associated Infections present a major threat to patient safety globally. According to studies, more than 50% of HAI could be prevented by proper hand hygiene. Effectiveness of hand hygiene is regularly evaluated with the fluorescent method: performing hand hygiene with a handrub containing an ultra violet (UV) fluorescent marker.

Sustained Release of Proteins Using Region‐Specific Tunable Degradability in Hydrogels through 3D Photopatterning and Complimentary Labile Bond Chemistry

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A series of ultraviolet‐ and near‐infrared radiation sensitive photoactivatable hydrogels are developed that can be controlled spatiotemporally down to µm precisions using one‐ and two‐photon uncaging. The latent hydroxylamine‐, hydrazine‐, and amine uncaged moieties are used to photopattern a series of diverse proteins displaying complimentary ...

Radiation‐Resistant Bacteria Deinococcus radiodurans‐Derived Extracellular Vesicles as Potential Radioprotectors

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Deinococcus radiodurans‐derived extracellular vesicles (R1‐EVs) provide radioprotection against total‐body irradiation‐induced acute radiation syndrome in mice. R1‐EVs mitigate oxidative damage by scavenging free radicals, promoting intestinal repair, enhancing hematopoietic function, and modulating immune responses. This study highlights the potential

A canine urinary tract infection representing the first clinical veterinary isolation of Acinetobacter ursingii

open access: yesNew Microbes and New Infections, 2018
Acinetobacter species can be important opportunistic pathogens in humans, especially in healthcare settings. We report here the first isolation of Acinetobacter ursingii from an animal species; it was isolated from a canine urinary tract infection, and ...
