Identification of olfactory receptor genes in the Japanese grenadier anchovy Coilia nasus [PDF]
Olfaction is essential for fish to detect odorant elements in the environment and plays a critical role in navigating, locating food and detecting predators. Olfactory function is produced by the olfactory transduction pathway and is activated by olfactory receptors (ORs) through the binding of odorant elements.

Wandering behaviour prevents inter and intra oceanic speciation in a coastal pelagic fish [PDF]
Small pelagic fishes have the ability to disperse over long distances and may present complex evolutionary histories. Here, Old World Anchovies (OWA) were used as a model system to understand genetic patterns and connectivity of fish between the Atlantic

Carotenoid Pigments of Japanese Anchovy
The major carotenoid pigment obtained from skin of japanese anchovy has been designated as anchovyxanthin. The present investigation, however, revealed the identity of anchovyxanthin with authentic zeaxanthin by direct comparison of their chemical and physical properties.

«Wrong fish» or wrong hypotheses: what happens to nekton of the Pacific waters at Kuril Islands?
A phenomenon of undulating fluctuations of nekton abundance in the Kuroshio system is discussed on example of japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus, as the most abundant and the most fluctuating species.

Swimming angle and target strength of larval Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) [PDF]
The swimming angle of larval Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) was measured in a tank, and target strength (TS) was calculated using a theoretical scattering model. The mean swimming angle was 12.8° (SD ±22.1). Increased speeds of flow led to increased mean swimming angles.

Sargassum horneri C. Agardh space capacity estimation reveals that thallus surface area varies with wet weight. [PDF]
Sargassum horneri C. Agardh is an important commercial edible seaweed species in east Asia. Benthic beds and floating rafts in coastal areas make excellent habitats for marine organisms to feed, hide, and spawn.

Predator-specific growth-selective predation on larval Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus [PDF]
Predator-specific growth-selective predation on larval Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus was demonstrated by comparing growth rates between the larvae ingested by predators and the larvae from the corresponding original populations through otolith microstructure analysis, based on original data and reanalyzed data from previous studies.
