A short review on toxin-induced animal models of Huntington’s disease

open access: yesChronic Diseases Journal
BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is a hereditary neurodegenerative motor and cognitive disorder. Different animal models of HD have been provided to study the different aspects of the disease, such as pathophysiology and treatment, and also the cure.

A Diels–Alder-Based Total Synthesis of (−)-Kainic Acid

open access: yes, 2016
An efficient synthesis of (−)-kainic acid, through a high-pressure-promoted Diels–Alder cycloaddition of a vinylogous malonate derived from 4-hydroxyproline, is described.

AP-1 inhibitory peptides attenuate in vitro cortical neuronal cell death induced by kainic acid

open access: yes, 2010
This study has assessed the neuroprotective efficacy of five AP-1 inhibitory peptides in an in vitro excitotoxicity model. The five AP-1 inhibitory peptides and controls of the JNK inhibitor peptide (JNKI-1D-TAT) and TAT cell-penetrating-peptide were ...

The renal effects of kainic acid.

open access: yesBrazilian journal of medical and biological research = Revista brasileira de pesquisas medicas e biologica, 1990
The effect of kainic acid (KA), a potent neurotoxic agent, on the renal function of rats was investigated. Intrahippocampal and intraperitoneal KA injections (2.5 micrograms and 8 mg/kg, respectively) led to a decrease in glomerular filtration rate and U/P inulin ratio with a concomitant increase in the amount of excreted Na+.

Cyclooxygenase-2 selective inhibitors aggravate kainic acid induced seizure and neuronal cell death in the hippocampus.

open access: yes, 1999
Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in the brain is expressed constitutively and also increased in pathological conditions such as seizure, cerebral ischemia, and inflammation.

Increased sensitivity to kainic acid in a genetic model of reduced NMDA receptor function

open access: yes, 2009
The pathophysiology of schizophrenia may involve reduced NMDA receptor function and experimental models of NMDA receptor hypofunction have proven useful for characterizing neurobiological abnormalities potentially relevant to schizophrenia.

Novel routes to kainoids: the total synthesis of (-)-a-kainic acid

open access: yes, 2013
This thesis contains three chapters concerning synthetic studies towards the alkaloids (-)-a-kainic acid; a natural product isolated from the Japanese marine algae Kainin-sou (???) or Digenea simplex and the close family member (-)-domoic acid isolated ...

Chemogenetic silencing of the subiculum blocks acute chronic temporal lobe epilepsy

open access: yesMolecular Brain
Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common form of medically-intractable epilepsy. Subicular hyperexcitability is frequently observed with TLE, presumably caused by impaired inhibition of local excitatory neurons.
