Kalman filters and batch filters for orbit determination with TIRA

open access: yes, 2022
Paper 57681, 12 S.This paper investigates the performance of Kalman filters and batch filters for the orbit determination with the TIRA (Tracking and Imaging Radar) system, developed and operated at Fraunhofer FHR.

Inertial‐Based LQG Control: A New Look at Inverted‐Pendulum Stabilization

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mechanical System Dynamics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Linear‐quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control is a well‐established method for optimal control through state estimation, particularly in stabilizing an inverted pendulum on a cart. In standard laboratory setups, sensor redundancy enables direct measurement of configuration variables using displacement sensors and rotary encoders. However, in outdoor

Optimal control and multitrophic physiologically‐based models: The binomial for successful decision support systems in insect pest management

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Decision‐making in integrated pest management (IPM) corresponds to an optimisation problem where the plant–pest dynamics and the control actions are constraints and where the objective function accounts for the costs of the treatments and the total income at the harvest time.

Bayesian Recursive Update for Ensemble Kalman Filters

open access: yes, 2023
Few real-world systems are amenable to truly Bayesian filtering; nonlinearities and non-Gaussian noises can wreak havoc on filters that rely on linearization and Gaussian uncertainty approximations.

Discriminative training of Kalman filters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
— Kalman filters are a workhorse of robotics and are routinely used in state-estimation problems. However, their performance critically depends on a large number of modeling parameters which can be very difficult to obtain, and are often set via ...

Towards operational assimilation of surface‐sensitive microwave radiances over land at Environment and Climate Change Canada: Investigation of key factors using a 1D‐EnVar framework

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The study evaluates five factors affecting the assimilation of surface‐sensitive Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit‐A (AMSU‐A) radiances over land, including the simultaneous estimation of surface emissivity and the standard set of state variables, to improve numerical weather prediction (NWP) at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

How consistently do ensemble prediction systems represent the growth of atmospheric uncertainty?

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Spread‐based diagnostics calculated for 12 ensemble prediction systems are compared to understand the consistency with which they represent atmospheric uncertainty growth. Good correlation between all these systems is found in the extratropics for a lead time range from 48 hr to between 96 hr and 192 hr.

Unscented Kalman Filters for Vision-Based Relative Dynamics Estimation between Cooperating Spacecraft [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
