Composition law of $\kappa$-entropy for statistically independent systems

open access: yes, 2017
The intriguing and still open question concerning the composition law of $\kappa$-entropy $S_{\kappa}(f)=\frac{1}{2\kappa}\sum_i (f_i^{1-\kappa}-f_i^{1+\kappa})$ with ...

Distinguishing noise from chaos: objective versus subjective criteria using Horizontal Visibility Graph [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A recently proposed methodology called the Horizontal Visibility Graph (HVG) [Luque {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. E., 80, 046103 (2009)] that constitutes a geometrical simplification of the well known Visibility Graph algorithm [Lacasa {\it et al.\/}, Proc ...

Probing the QCD Critical Point with Higher Moments of Net-proton Multiplicity Distributions

open access: yes, 2011
Higher moments of event-by-event net-proton multiplicity distributions are applied to search for the QCD critical point in the heavy ion collisions. It has been demonstrated that higher moments as well as moment products are sensitive to the correlation ...

Universality of kappa distributions

open access: yesEurophysics Letters
Abstract This paper reveals the universality of the particle energy distribution function, despite the arbitrariness that characterizes the generalized thermodynamic entropic function. We show that the canonical distribution, that is, the distribution function that maximizes this entropy under the constraints of canonical ensemble, is ...

H-Theorem and Generalized Entropies Within the Framework of Non Linear Kinetics

open access: yes, 2001
In the present effort we consider the most general non linear particle kinetics within the framework of the Fokker-Planck picture. We show that the kinetics imposes the form of the generalized entropy and subsequently we demonstrate the H-theorem.

The $\kappa$– $\mu$ Shadowed Fading Model: Unifying the $\kappa$– $\mu$ and $\eta$– $\mu$ Distributions [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, 2016
This paper shows that the recently proposed $\kappa$-$\mu$ shadowed fading model includes, besides the $\kappa$-$\mu$ model, the $\eta$-$\mu$ fading model as a particular case. This has important relevance in practice, as it allows for the unification of these popular fading distributions through a more general, yet equally tractable, model.

Is the Weibel instability enhanced by the suprathermal populations, or not? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The kinetic instabilities of the Weibel-type are presently invoked in a large variety of astrophysical scenarios because anisotropic plasma structures are ubiquitous in space. The Weibel instability is driven by a temperature anisotropy which is commonly

Proton firehose instability in bi-Kappa distributed plasmas [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2011
Context. Protons or heavier ions with anisotropic velocity distributions and non-thermal departure from Maxwellian, are frequently reported in the magnetosphere and at different altitudes in the solar wind. These observations are sustained by an extended number of mechanisms of acceleration in any direction with respect to the interplanetary magnetic ...

Ionization equilibrium of nitrogen under kappa electron distributions

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Non-Maxwellian electron energy distributions, such as kappa distributions, have been proposed to explain discrepancies in observed astrophysical plasmas. We employed the coronal approximation to study the level populations of ionized nitrogen under kappa

Aerosol hygroscopicity and CCN activation kinetics in a boreal forest environment during the 2007 EUCAARI campaign [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2011
Measurements of size-resolved cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations, subsaturated hygroscopic growth, size distribution, and chemical composition were collected from March through May, 2007, in the remote Boreal forests of Hyytiälä, Finland, as ...
