Clonal production of Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty in vitro

Journal of Applied Phycology, 2017
Micropropagation has proven to be a reliable method to mass produce certain crops. This method also has been applied in macroalgae to produce clones for seaweed farming. Protocols for callus production and shoot regeneration from protoplasts have been established for some seaweed species like Kappaphycus alvarezii.

Studies on the isolation and culture of protoplasts from Kappaphycus alvarezii

Acta Oceanologica Sinica, 2014
In this study, protoplasts were successfully isolated from Kappaphycus alvarezii using snail enzymes, abalone enzymes and cellulase. The optimum enzymic ratio was fixed to be 20% of abalone enzyme, 12% of cellulase and the osmotic stabilizer was 2.0 mol/L glucose.

Comparison of sulfuric and hydrochloric acids as catalysts in hydrolysis of Kappaphycus alvarezii (cottonii)

Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering, 2011
In this study, hydrolysis of marine algal biomass Kappaphhycus alvarezii using two different acid catalysts was examined with the goal of identifying optimal reaction conditions for the formation of sugars and by-products. K. alvarezii were hydrolyzed by autoclave using sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid as catalyst with different acid concentrations ...

Molecular and rheological characterization of carrageenan solutions extracted from Kappaphycus alvarezii

Carbohydrate Polymers, 2012
This study evaluates and relates the molecular and rheological characteristics of native carrageenan obtained from Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed. Native carrageenan was extracted by a differentiated methodology by atomization drying process, which reduces the time for obtaining carrageenan dry powder and minimizes costs and environmental damages ...

The Effect of Salinity on the Growth of Kappaphycus alvarezii

This study aims to determine the effect of different salinities on the growth of K. alvarezii.  This seaweed was obtained from Tumbak, Southeast Minahasa Regency—medium sea water for planting media in Malalayang water, Malalayang District, Manado City. The treatments were on salinity 25 ppt for the lower range, and 35 ppt for the higher range.

Cultivo ecosostenible de Kappaphycus alvarezii en Panama

2009

Kappaphycus alvarezii as a renewable source of kappa-carrageenan and other cosmetic ingredients

International Journal of Biological Macromolecules
Kappa-carrageenan is one of the most traded marine-derived hydrocolloids used in the food-and-beverage, pharmaceuticals, and personal care/cosmetics industries. K. alvarezii (previously known as Kappaphycus alvarezii) is arguably the most important natural producer based on annual production size and near-homogeneity of the product (i.e., primarily ...

Application of seaweed (Kappaphycus alvarezii) in Malaysian food products

2019
Kappaphycus alvarezii is a species of red algae, and one of the most important carrageenan sources for food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. It is commercially cultivated in the eastern part of Malaysia. Although K. alvarezii is rich in nutrients, it is limited in its integration into Malaysian food products.
