Evidence of spawning by hermaphroditic skipjack tuna Katsuwonus pelamis

Hermaphroditic gonads were collected from three skipjack tuna Katsuwonus pelamis in the western and central Pacific Ocean. Both ovarian and testicular tissues were found in the same gonad lobe for each of the three fish. Histological sections of the hermaphroditic gonad from one K. pelamis showed postovulatory follicles, which is evidence of spawning.

Abstract Skipjack tuna, 39–50 cm fork length, were studied during their first month in captivity in tanks 7.3 m in diameter and 1.1 m deep. Water temperatures were 23.3° to 25.7° C. Passage of food through the alimentary canal was estimated from 54 fish that were fed as many thawed smelt as they would eat.

Three specimens of larvae (5.2~7.8 mm in standard length (SL)), of the family Scombridae, were collected from the southeastern waters off Jeju Island in August, 2014. These specimens were identified to Katsuwonus pelamis have melanophores distributed on the 1st dorsal-fin spines and post ventral margin on caudal peduncle.

Growth of Skipjack Katsuwonus pelamis from Mozambique

Growth of skipjack, Katsuwonus pelamis in Mozambican waters was studied, using fork length data collected in 1983-1985, during an experimental pole-and-line/live-bait fishing program. Tentative estimates of growth parameters are FL∞=80 cm, K=0.6 yearˉ¹.
