Understanding the dynamics of keratin weakening and hydrolysis by proteases

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Keratin is the structural protein in hair, nails, feathers and horns. Keratin is recalcitrant, highly disulfide bonded and is generally inaccessible to common proteases.

A Novel Sprayable Fibrinogen/Glycosaminoglycans/Collagen‐Based Bioink for Skin Wound Healing Applied by a Handheld Dual‐Head Airbrush

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A dual‐head airbrush‐based spraying device, combined with a fibrinogen bioink enriched with glycosaminoglycans and collagen, enables the delivery of biomaterials and cells to promote wound healing. This system demonstrates effective skin regeneration in vitro and in vivo, with comparable results to autografts.

Deacetylation via SIRT2 prevents keratin-mutation-associated injury and keratin aggregation

open access: yesJCI Insight, 2023
Keratin (K) and other intermediate filament (IF) protein mutations at conserved arginines disrupt keratin filaments into aggregates and cause human epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS; K14-R125C) or predispose to mouse liver injury (K18-R90C).

Keratin Waste: The Biodegradable Polymers

open access: yesKeratin, 2018
Keratins are everywhere, from being the major components of household dust to common contaminants of laboratory protein analysis. Keratin is the major structural fibrous protein belonging to the large family of structural proteins to form hair, wool ...

Investigation on the Influence of Protein Corona and Platelet Adhesion on Storage Bag Surface on the Platelet Storage Lesion

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Platelet quality deteriorates during storage due to protein and platelet adhesion to current bag materials. Here, polymer coatings are identified that reduce adhesion and translated them to mini‐storage bags. Platelet quality are not impacted, despite significantly reducing adhesion.

Skin Keratins [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Keratins comprise the type I and type II intermediate filament-forming proteins and occur primarily in epithelial cells. They are encoded by 54 evolutionarily conserved genes (28 type I, 26 type II) and regulated in a pairwise and tissue type-, differentiation-, and context-dependent manner.

Human Skin Models in Biophotonics: Materials, Methods, and Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review discusses how the optical properties of human skin can be replicated in human skin models. It describes the principles, materials, and techniques used to develop artificial skin for biophotonics research. Finally, the article highlights recent advances and shows how these models improve the study of light‐skin interactions without the need ...

Keratin-Based Composite Bioactive Films and Their Preservative Effects on Cherry Tomato

open access: yesMolecules, 2022
In this study, keratins were extracted from pig nail waste through the reduction method using L-cysteine as a reductant. Curcumin was successively incorporated in a mixed solution including keratin, gelatin, and glycerin to prepare different kinds of ...

Characterisation of reduction state of cystine linkages on wool fibre surface under heterogeneous reaction conditions

open access: yesPolymer Testing, 2022
As a natural biomaterial with outstanding properties, keratin fibres hold promising potential in many application fields. The reduction of disulphides in keratin to the corresponding thiols plays a central role e.g.
