3D Kidneys and Kidney Tumor Semantic Segmentation using Boundary-Aware Networks [PDF]

open access: yesMICCAI Kidney Tumor Segmentation Challenge 2019, 2019
Automated segmentation of kidneys and kidney tumors is an important step in quantifying the tumor's morphometrical details to monitor the progression of the disease and accurately compare decisions regarding the kidney tumor treatment. Manual delineation techniques are often tedious, error-prone and require expert knowledge for creating unambiguous ...

Pharmacologic inhibition of RGD-binding integrins ameliorates fibrosis and improves function following kidney injury [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Fibrosis is a final common pathway for many causes of progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD). Arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD)-binding integrins are important mediators of the pro-fibrotic response by activating latent TGF-β at sites of injury and ...

Association between urinary sodium, creatinine, albumin, and long term survival in chronic kidney disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Dietary sodium intake is associated with hypertension and cardiovascular risk in the general population. In patients with chronic kidney disease, sodium intake has been associated with progressive renal disease, but not independently of proteinuria.

Beyond digital twins: the role of foundation models in enhancing the interpretability of multiomics modalities in precision medicine

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review highlights how foundation models enhance predictive healthcare by integrating advanced digital twin modeling with multiomics and biomedical data. This approach supports disease management, risk assessment, and personalized medicine, with the goal of optimizing health outcomes through adaptive, interpretable digital simulations, accessible ...

GEN1 as a risk factor for human congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract

open access: yesHuman Genomics
Background Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are prevalent birth defects. Although pathogenic CAKUT genes are known, they are insufficient to reveal the causes for all patients.

Sirtuin 3 regulates mitochondrial protein acetylation and metabolism in tubular epithelial cells during renal fibrosis

open access: yesCell Death and Disease, 2021
Proximal tubular epithelial cells (TECs) demand high energy and rely on mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation as the main energy source. However, this is disturbed in renal fibrosis.

A comprehensive review of Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
This review was written to provide a comprehensive summary of the suggested etiologies of Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology (CKDu) in Sri Lanka. In this review, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is explained in detail and its known etiologies are discussed.

Effect of ovariectomy on the progression of chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD) in female Cy/+ rats [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Male Cy/+ rats have shown a relatively consistent pattern of progressive kidney disease development that displays multiple key features of late stage chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD), specifically the development of cortical bone ...

Hydrophobicity causes anomalous migration of cystine/glutamate antiporter SLC7A11 in SDS‐PAGE with low acrylamide concentration

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
SLC7A11 frequently migrates faster in SDS‐PAGE. The present study found that the high hydrophobicity of SLC7A11 causes its anomalous migration in SDS‐PAGE with a low concentration of acrylamide gel. Replacing isoleucine with asparagine reduced hydrophobicity and restored its normal migration at 55 kDa, revealing the role of hydrophobicity and gel ...
