A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

The Role of Black Soybean and Purple Sweet Potato Active Compound on Advanced Glycation End-Product in Streptozotocin-Induced Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Rat

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Life Science, 2019
Diabetic nephropathy is one of the diabetes complications attacking kidney leading to kidney damage. Hyperglycemia accompanying DM causes the increase of Ad-vanced Glycation End-Product (AGE) and Receptor Advanced Glycation End-Product (RAGE) activity ...

Generation of mitochondria-rich kidney organoids from expandable intermediate mesoderm progenitors reprogrammed from human urine cells under defined medium

open access: yesCell & Bioscience, 2022
Background The kidneys require vast amounts of mitochondria to provide ample energy to reabsorb nutrients and regulate electrolyte, fluid, and blood pressure homeostasis.

An Intact Kidney Slice Model to Investigate Vasa Recta Properties and Function in situ [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background: Medullary blood flow is via vasa recta capillaries, which possess contractile pericytes. In vitro studies using isolated descending vasa recta show that pericytes can constrict/dilate descending vasa recta when vasoactive substances are ...

Response to Allopurinol and Febuxostat According to the Fractional Excretion of Urate in Men With Gout

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Body mass index (BMI), glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and pretreatment urate levels have been reported to influence the urate‐lowering response to allopurinol. We investigated whether the fractional excretion of uric acid (FEUA) also modulates this response and relates to oxypurinol concentrations.

Morfometría de cortes histológicos de los túbulos renales normales en una muestra de humanos adultos

open access: yesRevista Electrónica Dr. Zoilo E. Marinello Vidaurreta, 2017
Fundamento: los túbulos renales normales se han descrito por morfometría, lo que permite “reconstruir” en tercera dimensión la forma y el tamaño del espécimen estudiado.Objetivo: caracterizar la magnitud de los túbulos renales normales en humanos adultos,

Separate roles of PKA and EPAC in renal function unraveled by the optogenetic control of cAMP levels in vivo [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Cyclic AMP (cAMP) is a ubiquitous second messenger that regulates a variety of essential processes in diverse cell types, functioning via cAMP-dependent effectors such as protein kinase A (PKA) and/or exchange proteins directly activated by cAMP (EPAC ...

Nanozymes at the Bio‐Nano Interface: From Synthesis, Defect Engineering, Catalytic Behavior in Biological Microenvironments, and Biosafety Implications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Nanozymes (NZs) have emerged as versatile artificial enzymes with tunable catalytic properties driven by atomic coordination, defect engineering, and surface chemistry. This review presents a bio–nano interface framework linking synthesis strategies, structural design, and catalytic behavior within complex biological microenvironments.
