Computer algebra in systems biology [PDF]
Systems biology focuses on the study of entire biological systems rather than on their individual components. With the emergence of high-throughput data generation technologies for molecular biology and the development of advanced mathematical modeling techniques, this field promises to provide important new insights.

Bistability of the lac operon during growth of Escherichia coli on lactose and lactose + glucose [PDF]
The lac operon of Escherichia coli exhibits bistability. Early studies showed that bistability occurs during growth on TMG/succinate and lactose + glucose, but not during growth on lactose. More recent studies with lacGFP-transfected cells show bistability with TMG/succinate, but not with lactose and lactose + glucose.

Insights into the Geobacillus stearothermophilus species based on phylogenomic principles
Background The genus Geobacillus comprises bacteria that are Gram positive, thermophilic spore-formers, which are found in a variety of environments from hot-springs, cool soils, to food manufacturing plants, including dairy manufacturing plants. Despite

DNA looping and physical constraints on transcription regulation [PDF]
DNA looping participates in transcriptional regulation, for instance, by allowing distal binding sites to act synergistically. Here we study this process and compare different regulatory mechanisms based on repression with and without looping. Within a simple mathematical model for the lac operon, we show that regulation based on DNA looping, in ...

Characterization of Boolean Networks with Single or Bistable States [PDF]
Many biological systems, such as metabolic pathways, exhibit bistability behavior: these biological systems exhibit two distinct stable states with switching between the two stable states controlled by certain conditions. Since understanding bistability is key for understanding these biological systems, mathematical modeling of the bistability ...
