A comparison of postoperative blood lactate concentrations and kinetics in cardiac surgical patients being and not being administered metformin

open access: yesJournal of Medical Science, 2022
Aim. Early discontinuation of metformin before cardiac surgery is advised by several national societies, although no hard evidence exist supporting this practice. This precaution is mostly extrapolated by data on different clinical settings.

Minimal lactate clearance proclaims pediatric intensive care unit mortality

open access: yesJournal of Pediatric Critical Care, 2019
Background: Lactate clearance among the survived patients is higher and is inversely related to the PRISM III Score. Objectives: We aimed to correlate lactate clearance with pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) mortality. Material and Methods: This was

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Serum lactate clearance as a predictor of outcome in infants' postcardiac surgery

open access: yesHeart India, 2022
Background and Aims: Prediction of postoperative outcomes by conventional hemodynamic parameters and risk scoring systems immediately after pediatric cardiac surgery has not been found to be reliable.

Reduced gluconeogenesis and lactate clearance in Huntington's disease

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2010
We studied systemic and brain glucose and lactate metabolism in Huntington's disease (HD) patients in response to ergometer cycling. Following termination of exercise, blood glucose increased abruptly in control subjects, but no peak was seen in any of the HD patients (2.0 ± 0.5 vs. 0.0 ± 0.2mM, P < 2 × 10(-6)).

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Alcohol consumption decreases lactate clearance in acutely injured patients

open access: yes, 2016
Introduction—Alcohol, a common risk factor for injury, has direct toxic effects on the liver. The use of lactate clearance has been well described as an indicator of the adequacy of resuscitation in injured patients.

Deciphering transcriptional plasticity in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma reveals alterations in sensory neuron innervation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pancreatic sensory neurons innervating healthy and PDAC tissue were retrogradely labeled and profiled by single‐cell RNA sequencing. Tumor‐associated innervation showed a dominant neurofilament‐positive subtype, altered mitochondrial gene signatures, and reduced non‐peptidergic neurons.
