Evaluating Cytocompatibility of Corynebacterium glutamicum‐poly Vinyl Alcohol Living Biomaterials for Ocular Use

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
In ophthalmology, living biomaterials such as living contact lenses appear promising for sustained drug delivery or biosensing. The cytocompatibility of Cg‐PVA hydrogels, developed as a model living contact lens, is investigated with the ocular surface, showing their potential translation to the clinic.

The recoverability of fingerprints on paper exposed to elevated temperatures - Part 2: natural fluorescence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Previous work by the authors [1] investigated the recoverability of fingerprints on paper which had been exposed to elevated temperatures by comparing various chemical enhancement techniques (ninhydrin, 1,8-diazafluoren-9-one (DFO), and physical ...

Highly Tunable and Cell‐Remodelable Thiol‐ene Alginate‐Peptide Crosslinked Hydrogels to Recreate Cellular and Organoid Microenvironments for Biofabrication

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Norbornene‐functionalized alginate is crosslinked with a di‐thiolated peptide sequence cleavable by cell‐secreted matrix metalloproteinases and decorated with cell‐adhesion peptides upon exposure to UV. Thyroid follicles, endometrial and intestinal organoids are encapsulated in a gentle manner with high cell viability and correct phenotype ...

A Tri‐Culture Heart‐on‐a‐Chip Platform With iPSC‐Derived Cardiac Cells for Predictive Cardiotoxicity Testing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents the first entirely isogenic heart‐on‐chip, unifying cardiomyocytes, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells from a single iPSC source. The platform reveals a critical biological insight: the endothelium actively shields cardiac tissue from drug‐induced toxicity, challenging the predictive accuracy of conventional, avascular models for ...

Raising the iron curtain: Lactate's secret role in oxidative stress defense

open access: yesRedox Biology
The hypothesis presented here is that certain cell types under oxidative stress, such as cancer cells, reprogram their metabolism to accumulate lactate, along with cytosolic Fe2+ within the labile iron pool, thereby establishing a metabolite-based H2O2 ...
