Citrate metabolism in Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus plantarum [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Microbiology, 1998
Information on the factors influencing citrate metabolism in lactobacilli is limited and could be useful in understanding the growth of lactobacilli in ripening cheese. Citrate was not used as an energy source by either Lactobacillus casei ATCC 393 or Lact. plantarum 1919 and did not affect the growth rate when co-metabolized with glucose or galactose.

The prevalence of dental caries and associated factors among students living with disability in the Amhara region, Ethiopia

open access: yesClinical and Experimental Dental Research, Volume 8, Issue 6, Page 1505-1515, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Objectives People living with disability are more vulnerable to dental caries and have a high decayed, missed, and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) index and untreated dental disease than nondisabled individuals. In Ethiopia, there is a dearth of information on the oral health status of the disabled population.

Respiratory complex I‐mediated NAD+ regeneration regulates cancer cell proliferation through the transcriptional and translational control of p21Cip1 expression by SIRT3 and SIRT7

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
NAD+ regeneration by mitochondrial complex I NADH dehydrogenase is important for cancer cell proliferation. Specifically, NAD+ is necessary for the activities of NAD+‐dependent deacetylases SIRT3 and SIRT7, which suppress the expression of p21Cip1 cyclin‐dependent kinase inhibitor, an antiproliferative molecule, at the translational and transcriptional

Antibacterial effects of natural compounds on biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans

open access: yesClinical and Experimental Dental Research, Volume 8, Issue 6, Page 1426-1433, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Streptococcus mutans is the main cariogenic pathogen in the oral cavity, considered to contribute toward oral diseases. S. mutans is predominantly entrapped in plaque biofilms. Objectives In this study, we surveyed the antibacterial activity of natural compounds in terms of the biofilm production of S. mutans. Material and Methods We extracted

A novel sustainable role of compost as a universal protective substitute for fish, chicken, pig, and cattle, and its estimation by structural equation modeling [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Natural decomposition of organic matter is essential in food systems, and compost is used worldwide as an organic fermented fertilizer. However, as a feature of the ecosystem, its effects on the animals are poorly understood. Here we show that oral administration of compost and/or its derived thermophilic Bacillaceae, i.e., Caldibacillus hisashii and ...

Purification and characterization of a thermophilic NAD+‐dependent lactate dehydrogenase from Moorella thermoacetica

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The thermophilic acetogenic model organism Moorella thermoacetica can utilize lactate as substrate. The formation of lactate by reduction of pyruvate is energetically favorable, but the reverse reaction, the oxidation of lactate to pyruvate with NAD+ as electron acceptor is challenging.

Coding Synthetic Chemistry Strategies for Furan Valorization into Bacterial Designer Cells**

open access: yesChemSusChem, Volume 16, Issue 2, January 20, 2023., 2023
Designer cells: A microbial factory is designed to directly convert furfuryl alcohols to synthetically valuable and enantioenriched delta‐lactones. Pairing Achmatowicz ring expansions and borrowing hydrogen redoxisomerizations, two otherwise non‐natural transformations, this study highlights the potential of introducing novel biocatalytic tools into ...

Biofilm Formation and Antibacterial Properties of Lactobacillus Isolated from Indigenous Dairy Products

open access: yesJournal of Food Quality and Hazards Control, 2021
Background: The health benefits of probiotic bacteria are not unknown to anyone. On the other hand, indigenous dairy sources are a potential source of native probiotics. This study aimed to describe the inhibitory activity of Cell-Free Supernatant (CFS),

Intestinal Microbial Composition of Children in a Randomized Controlled Trial of Probiotics to Treat Acute Gastroenteritis

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2022
Compositional analysis of the intestinal microbiome in pre-schoolers is understudied. Effects of probiotics on the gut microbiota were evaluated in children under 4-years-old presenting to an emergency department with acute gastroenteritis. Included were
