Plant sesquiterpene lactones [PDF]
Sesquiterpene lactones (STLs) are a prominent group of plant secondary metabolites predominantly found in the Asteraceae family and have multiple ecological roles and medicinal applications. This review describes the ecological significance of STLs, highlighting their roles in plant defense mechanisms against herbivory and as phytotoxins, alongside ...

α-Exo-unsaturated-γ-butyrolactones were prepared. Reduction of α-benzylidene succinic acid esters with lithium aluminum hydride afford 2-benzylidene-1,4-butanediols. Manganese dioxide oxidation of glycols followed by silver oxide oxidation and lactonization afford α-benzylidene-γ-butyrolactones. Thus α-benzylidene-, α-anisylidene-, α-veratrylidene-, α-(

Microbial Reduction of Ketopantoyl Lactone to Pantoyl Lactone [PDF]
The results of a microbial survey study have shown that the ability to reduce added ketopantoic acid (or ketopantoyl lactone) and accumulate pantoic acid (or pantoyl lactone) in the growth medium is widespread among diverse fungi. The reductions generally proceeded with less than full stereoselectivity.

Antimicrobial Activity of Lactones
The development of bacterial resistance to antibiotics and the consequent lack of effective therapy is one of the biggest problems in modern medicine. A consequence of these processes is an urgent need to continuously design and develop novel antimicrobial agents. Among the compounds showing antimicrobial potential, lactones are a group to explore. For

Analysis of putative resistance gene loci in UK field populations of Haemonchus contortus after six years of macrocyclic lactone use [PDF]
Sheep farmers in the UK rely on strategic anthelmintic use to treat and control gastrointestinal roundworms in their flocks. However, resistance to these drugs is now widespread and threatens the sustainability of sheep production.

Carbocations and the Complex Flavor and Bouquet of Wine: Mechanistic Aspects of Terpene Biosynthesis in Wine Grapes. [PDF]
Computational chemistry approaches for studying the formation of terpenes/terpenoids in wines are presented, using five particular terpenes/terpenoids (1,8-cineole, α-ylangene, botrydial, rotundone, and the wine lactone), volatile compounds (or their ...

Nine New and Five Known Polyketides Derived from a Deep Sea-Sourced Aspergillus sp. 16-02-1
Nine new C9 polyketides, named aspiketolactonol (1), aspilactonols A–F (2–7), aspyronol (9) and epiaspinonediol (11), were isolated together with five known polyketides, (S)-2-(2′-hydroxyethyl)-4-methyl-γ-butyrolactone (8), dihydroaspyrone (10 ...

Research Progress on the Sources and Preparation Methods of Chiral Lactones [PDF]
γ- and δ-lactones are important flavor compounds, which are widely used in foods and daily chemical flavors. Due to the chiral centers in the molecules, the aroma characteristics of the two enantiomers of each of the lactones are quite different, which ...

Evaluation of a new high-throughput method for identifying quorum quenching bacteria [PDF]
Quorum sensing (QS) is a population-dependent mechanism for bacteria to synchronize social behaviors such as secretion of virulence factors. The enzymatic interruption of QS, termed quorum quenching (QQ), has been suggested as a promising alternative ...
