Improved Gold Nanoprobes for Detection of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms: The Influence of Size
Unique plasmonic properties of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are used for detection of a single nucleotide polymorphism related to lactose intolerance. Assays based on 20 nm and 35 nm AuNPs functionalized with specific oligonucleotide probes are compared and found that 35 nm AuNPs allow a reduction of 80% and 48% in the amount of gold and oligonucleotide ...

The Critical Effect of Hydration on the Resonant Signatures of THz Biospectroscopy [PDF]
Here we present an original study of the effect of hydration on Terahertz absorption signatures in biomolecular (lactose monohydrate and biotin) and bioparticles( Bacillus thuringiensis and Bacillus cereus spores). We observe "read-shift" in center frequency with increasing hydration in all samples, consistent with Lorentzian-oscillator behavior.

The LuxS Based Quorum Sensing Governs Lactose Induced Biofilm Formation by Bacillus subtilis
Bacillus species present a major concern in the dairy industry as they can form biofilms in pipelines and on surfaces of equipment and machinery used in the entire line of production. These biofilms represent a continuous hygienic problem and can lead to

Undernourished Children and Milk Lactose
Background: Lactose is an important energy source in young mammals, and in fully breast-fed human infants, it constitutes around 40% of the total daily energy intake. The role of lactose in feeding of undernourished infants and young children is not well

Dynamic modeling of gene expression in prokaryotes: application to glucose-lactose diauxie in Escherichia coli [PDF]
Coexpression of genes or, more generally, similarity in the expression profiles poses an unsurmountable obstacle to inferring the gene regulatory network (GRN) based solely on data from DNA microarray time series. Clustering of genes with similar expression profiles allows for a course-grained view of the GRN and a probabilistic determination of the ...
