Newly developed parallel small-scale enzymatic membrane reactors (EMRs) were used to enhance the synthesis of lactulose using β-galactosidase. Under batch operation, the productivity of lactulose decreased abruptly from 2.72 down to 0.04 mg lactulose/(Uenzymeh) over 35 h of reaction.

Effects of Lactulose on Nitrogen Metabolism
Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, 1997Lactulose is the most frequently utilized agent in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy because of its efficacy and the fact that it has few serious side effects. How this non-absorbable disaccharide works has been a matter of controversy, but evidence suggests that metabolism by the enteric flora is necessary for its mechanism of action.

A rapid method for the assay of lactulose
Analytical Biochemistry, 1965Abstract A simple and rapid method of determining lactulose in the presence of the other carbohydrates has been described. The method is based on the cysteine-carbazole-sulfuric acid reaction of lactulose separated from the other carbohydrates by thin-layer chromatography.
