Large-area single-mode photonic bandgap VCSELs [PDF]
We demonstrate that the photonic bandgap effect can be used to control the modes of large area vertical cavity surface emitting lasers. We obtain more than 20 dB side mode suppression ratios in a 10-micron area device.

It is well known that periodic variations in refractive index can be used to create guidance in an optical fiber via photonic bandgap effects. It has also been shown that periodic structure in index-guiding microstructured fibers can lead to the guidance of additional leaky higher-order modes due to bandgap effects.
