Repellent Effects of Host Essential Oils and Limited Effects of Host Length on Tree‐Killing Bark Beetle Attacks

This study demonstrated that the host essential oil significantly reduced Polygraphus proximus Blandford (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) attack density, but the density did not differ significantly among logs of various lengths of Abies sachalinensis. Our study suggests that host essential oils can perform as repellents against conifer‐infesting bark beetles.

Soil pH modulates microbial nitrogen allocation in soil via compositional and metabolic shifts across forests in Japan

This study reveals how soil pH regulates microbial N allocation in forest soils across Japan. We show that microbial abundance controls the overall rate of N cycling, while microbial composition and metabolic potential determine whether ammonium is released or retained.
