Customizable edge contour glass cutting enabled by improved volumetric holographic algorithm

open access: yesInternational Journal of Extreme Manufacturing
Ultra-thin glass (UTG) possesses a broad spectrum of applications in high-end electronic devices, such as foldable smartphones and flexible displays. Laser beam shaping for arc cutting UTG screens helps reduce stress concentration, thereby effectively ...

Adaptive optics for control of the laser welding process

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2013
The laser head with fixed focus optics is commonly used for the deep penetration laser welding. In such case the geometry and position of the beam waist are defined by the focusing lens.

A Dislocation Perspective on Strength and Toughness in Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Dislocations in ceramics enjoy a long but yet under‐appreciated history. The three research waves for dislocations in ceramics highlight the topic evolution over the last 90 years. This review focuses on the impact of dislocation on strength and toughness in ceramics.

Historical perspective of laser beam shaping [PDF]

open access: yesSPIE Proceedings, 2002
An overview of the history and current practices of laser beam shaping is presented. When diffraction effects are not important, geometrical methods for laser beam shaping (ray tracing, conservation of energy within a bundle of rays, and the constant optical path length condition) can be used to determine system configurations, including aspheric ...

Fly's eye condenser based on chirped microlens arrays

open access: yes, 2022
Paper 666309Lens array arrangements are commonly used for the beam shaping of almost arbitrary input intensity distributions into a top-hat. The setup usually consists of a Fourier lens and two identical regular microlens arrays - often referred to as ...

Inverse Identification of Energy‐Dependent Laser Absorptivity in NiTi Laser Powder‐Bed Fusion via Calibrated Melt Pool Simulation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A combined experimental–computational framework identifies energy‐dependent laser absorptivity for NiTi in laser powder‐bed fusion, applicable to conduction and transition modes. Single‐track experiments and thermofluid smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations are coupled through inverse analysis of melt pool geometry.

Convergent laser beam shapes: Unveiling the dynamics of Laser-induced elastic waves in composite materials

open access: yesResults in Physics
Overcoming the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in laser ultrasonic testing of composite materials remains a significant challenge. Current efforts focus on enhancing SNR by inserting more energy into the material through temporal and/or spatial ...

Influence of Scan Strategies in Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion on Solidification, Microstructure, and High‐Temperature Compressive Properties of γ′‐Strengthened Inconel 738LC

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Experiments and thermophysical simulations were conducted to investigate the electron beam powder bed fusion electron beam (PBF‐EB/M) process for the γ′‐strengthened nickel‐based superalloy Inconel 738LC. The results demonstrate the impact of process‐induced microstructural variations on high‐temperature mechanical behavior, providing a basis for ...

Microscopic applications of holographic beam shaping and studies of optically trapped aerosols

open access: yes, 2009
This thesis has two themes. Firstly, it concerns the original application of holographic beam shaping, employed through the methods associated with optical manipulation, to three microscopic fields of research.
