Evaluation of EC-5 Soil Moisture Sensorsfor Real-Time Determination of PoultryManure or Litter Moisture Content [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Moisture content (Ψ) of poultry manure or litter is an important property of the material. Relating manure or litter Ψ to its ammonia (NH3) emission is conducive to assessing and/or controlling real-time ammonia emissions from the manure or litter ...

Implications for welfare, productivity and sustainability of the variation in reported levels of mortality for laying hen flocks kept in different housing systems: A meta-analysis of ten studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Data from ten sources comprising 3,851 flocks were modelled to identify variation in levels of mortality in laying hens. The predicted increase with age was curvilinear with significant variation between the seven breed categories. Mortality was higher

Non‐destructive quantification of egg yolk ratio using visible–near‐infrared hyperspectral imaging, machine learning and explainable AI

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND Accurate, non‐destructive quantification of egg yolk ratio holds considerable significance for the food industry, nutritional assessment and egg grading. Conventional approaches are limited by destructive testing and insufficient throughput for commercial applications.

Meta‐regression of the relationship between dietary 18C n‐3 concentration and enrichment of n‐3 fatty acids in liver and breast muscle of broiler chickens

open access: yesLipids, EarlyView.
Abstract The long‐chain n‐3 fatty acids (FA) eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have human health benefits, and many experiments have investigated the ability of plant n‐3 sources to enrich n‐3 FA in broiler meat. A meta‐regression was conducted to evaluate the relationship between dietary 18‐carbon n‐3 FA content and the ...

Crude glycerin in co-composting with laying hen manure reduces N losses

open access: yesScientia Agricola
: The composting of laying hen manure is an efficient way of treating waste and producing an organic fertilizer with excellent characteristics; however, the high N losses reduce its concentration in the resulting fertilizer. Associating this residue with

Examining the catching, carrying, and crating process during depopulation of end-of-lay hens

open access: yesJournal of Applied Poultry Research, 2021
Summary: Laying hen flocks undergo depopulation at end of lay, a difficult process that has been associated with injuries and is considered stressful to hens and human collectors. To date, most assessments of depopulations have been conducted within cage

Tuning the Enzymatic Activity of Aqueous Phase Separation‐Based PEI‐PSS Membranes

open access: yesMacromolecular Chemistry and Physics, EarlyView.
Polyelectrolyte membranes were prepared by APS through the complexation of PEI and PSS. Lysozyme and laccase were incorporated to give enzymatic functions. This work demonstrates the possibility of tuning the enzymatic activities of APS‐produced membranes by changing the polyelectrolyte mixing ratio and enzyme concentration.

Activation of AMP-activated protein kinase signaling pathway ameliorates steatosis in laying hen hepatocytes

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2021
The fatty liver hemorrhage syndrome in laying hens is a disease of lipid metabolism disorders. Importantly, energy sensor AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) plays an essential role in homeostasis regulation of liver lipid.
