Leaky modes in graded index optical fibers

Applied Optics, 1976
Leaky mode attenuation coefficients for graded index optical fibers are derived using the WKB approximation. For the case of a parabolic index profile, the attenuation coefficients for explicitly evaluated and used to calculate the leaky mode contribution to near field and attenuation measurements.

MEMS tunable resonant leaky mode filters

IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2006
A tunable double-grating resonant leaky mode microelectromechanical-type element is introduced. A significant level of tunability is demonstrated by adjusting mechanically the structural symmetry of the grating profile. Tuning is also possible by variation of the thickness of the resonant layer.

Leaky-modes leakage from planar circuits

1997 IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium Digest, 2002
Inherent leakages in certain two-dimensional planar circuits are related to the propagation of leaky modes, contrasting to the conventional awareness of the association of leaky modes with the uniform waveguides. Both theoretical and experimental studies confirm that the newly found phenomena exist in proximity-coupled or direct-fed two-dimensional ...

Two-dimensional coupled-mode theory for modeling leaky-mode arrays

Optics Letters, 1990
The use of a two-dimensional coupled-mode theory for modeling buried-ridge-waveguide index-guided arrays in general and leaky-mode arrays in particular is described. This formalism provides a framework for understanding the complicated modal structure of leaky-mode arrays by expressing their modes as linear combinations of the two dimensional modes of ...

Understanding leaky modes: slab waveguide revisited

Advances in Optics and Photonics, 2009
Computational methods for determining the complex propagation constants of leaky waveguide modes have become so powerful and so readily available that it is possible to use these methods with little understanding of what they are calculating. We compare different computational methods for calculating the propagation constants of the leaky modes ...

Leaky bound modes in planar waveguides

1999 IEEE LEOS Annual Meeting Conference Proceedings. LEOS'99. 12th Annual Meeting. IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society 1999 Annual Meeting (Cat. No.99CH37009), 2003
We propose a new and efficient method of analyzing leaky waveguides where we graphically find the extreme reflectivity of a light ray incident from one side of the outermost cladding toward the leaky waveguide. Such a field, called the leaky bound mode by us, is briefly described and numerical examples are presented.

Leaky Quasi Modes in Curved Plates

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2005
Cylindrical engineering structures can sometimes be inspected effectively using a circumferential guided wave technique to cover the full circumference from a single location. Many of these structures are embedded so that energy leaks into the surrounding material as the waves propagate around the structure.

Leaky Modes in Nonlinear Optical Resonators

2000
The aim of this lecture is to show that leaky modes provide a convenient mean for the study of nonlinear optical interactions in “open” resonators such as Fabry-Perot’s, multilayer structures, prism or grating couplers, etc.

Multifunctional Waveguide Tunnelling via Leaky Modes

Laser & Photonics Reviews
AbstractMuch effort in the past few years has been made in tunnelling, however, no work has been reported so far on how to maintain the maximum tunnelling of complex optical fields in waveguides, due to the limitations of existing physical mechanisms. Here, a new paradigm is presented for realizing anomalous wave tunnelling through a general effective ...
