Chronic left heart failure is a common cause of pulmonary hypertension and is associated with a worse outcome in patients across the spectrum of heart failure severity. Pulmonary hypertension results from backward transmission of elevated left atrial pressures to the pulmonary venous circulation and resultant pulmonary venous hypertension.
