Ubiquinone biosynthesis in Leishmania major promastigotes
International Journal for Parasitology, 1995Promastigotes of Leishmania major contain a ubiquinone which has a side chain made up of nine isoprene subunits (UQ9). Incorporation of radioactivity from [14C] acetate and [14C] mevalonate into ubiquinone as well as the identification of hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMG CoA reductase), and mevalonate kinase indicate that the isoprenoid ...

The control of Leishmania (Leishmania) major by TNF in vivo is dependent on the parasite strain
Microbes and Infection, 2004Previous studies provided evidence that the role of TNF in the control of Leishmania (Leishmania) major might vary with the parasite strain. Here, we analyzed the development and outcome of cutaneous leishmaniasis in C57BL/6 wild-type (B6.WT) and TNF-deficient (B6. TNF(-/-)) mice infected with two different isolates of L. (L.) major (FRIEDLIN vs. BNI).

Leishmania mexicana and Leishmania tropica major: Adoptive transfer of immunity in mice
Experimental Parasitology, 1980Abstract The transfer of lymphocytes from NIH mice infected with Leishmania tropica major to nonimmune syngeneic mice, which had received 600 rad irradiation, markedly altered the course of subsequent Leishmania mexicana and L.t. major infections in these animals, when compared with infections in irradiated mice reconstituted with lymphocytes ...

Population structure of leishmania major in southeastern morocco
Acta Tropica, 2020Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an infectious disease caused by various Leishmania species. It is among the most neglected tropical diseases and has been considered a major health threat over the past decades in the country. Its zoonotic form caused by Leishmania (L) major is the most prevalent in Morocco.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in Nepal: Leishmania major as a cause
Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2008Nepal is endemic for visceral leishmaniasis; however, recently a solitary report of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) was recorded. The present report describes a CL case in a Nepalese woman, initially referred as a case of basal cell carcinoma. Histopathological examination, culture and PCR analysis of lesions revealed it to be a case of CL.

Leishmania major: a compassionate parasite?
Trends in Parasitology, 2001Parasites live at the expense of their host. To ensure survival of the parasite genome, it is important that the host survives at least until successful transmission of the parasite. The level of tetrahydrobiopterin (H4B) in Leishmania major parasites plays a crucial role in the development of the insect stage of the parasite into the metacyclic ...

Leishmanicidal and apoptotic activities of oleuropein on Leishmania major
Int. Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, 2014Leishmania is a unicellular protozoan parasite causing a wide range of human diseases ranging from localized self-healing cutaneous lesions to fatal visceral infections. The aim of the present study is to assess the cytotoxic, anti-proliferative, and apoptotic effects of oleuropein on Leishmania major promastigotes (MHOM/SA/84/JISH) and to compare its ...

Expression and subcellular localization of ORC1 in Leishmania major
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2008The mechanism of DNA replication is highly conserved in eukaryotes, with the process being preceded by the ordered assembly of pre-replication complexes (pre-RCs). Pre-RC formation is triggered by the association of the origin replication complex (ORC) with chromatin. Leishmania major appears to have only one ORC ortholog, ORC1.

Safety and immunogenicity of an autoclaved Leishmania major vaccine.
East African medical journal, 2003To test the safety and immunogenicity of two doses of autoclaved L. major (ALM) vaccine mixed with BCG.Kala-azar endemic area of eastern Sudan. This was a randomised, double blind and BCG controlled phase I/II study.Eighty healthy volunteers (forty children and forty adults) with no past history of kala-azar, no reactivity to leishmanin antigen and with
