Evidence That a Malate/Inorganic Phosphate Exchange Translocator Imports Carbon across the Leucoplast Envelope for Fatty Acid Synthesis in Developing Castor Seed Endosperm [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Physiology, 1997
Abstract In this study we examined the processes by which malate and pyruvate are taken up across the leucoplast envelope for fatty acid synthesis in developing castor (Ricinus communis L.) seed endosperm. Malate was taken up by isolated leucoplasts with a concentration dependence indicative of protein-mediated transport.

Treatment With Kiwi Peel Extract Delays Browning in Ready‐to‐Eat Lettuce

open access: yesJournal of Food Biochemistry, Volume 2024, Issue 1, 2024.
Browning reactions caused by oxidative stress occurring during postharvest procedures significantly compromise the quality of ready‐to‐eat (RTE) vegetables, negatively affecting their market value. Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD) are two major enzymes involved in this phenomenon, as they oxidize phenolic compounds to quinones, which in ...

Apicoplast‐Resident Processes: Exploiting the Chink in the Armour of Plasmodium falciparum Parasites

open access: yesAdvances in Pharmacological and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Volume 2024, Issue 1, 2024.
The discovery of a relict plastid, also known as an apicoplast (apicomplexan plastid), that houses housekeeping processes and metabolic pathways critical to Plasmodium parasites’ survival has prompted increased research on identifying potent inhibitors that can impinge on apicoplast‐localised processes.

Fine Structural Studies of Plastids during their Differentiation and Dedifferentiation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
Prikazani su razni tipovi plastida, njihova varijabilnost i interkonvertibilnost, na temelju višegodišnjih istraživanja autora. Na većem broju objekata opisani su ultrastruktura i razvoj glavnih tipova plastida (kloroplasta, etioplasta, kromoplasta i ...

Calicinal trichomes of Adenocalymma magnificum (Bignoniaceae) producing lipophilic substances: ultrastructural and functional aspects

open access: yesRevista de Biología Tropical, 2015
Plant structures that secrete lipids and phenolic compounds are often associated with the protection and development of organs against desiccation, in addition to the protection they provide against animals, as the capitate trichomes of Adenocalymma ...

Ultrastructural observations on foliar glandular trichomes of Stevia rebaudiana [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Foliar glandular trichomes of Stevia rebaudiana (Bert.) Bert. were examined by transmission electron microscopy in order to detect changes occurring in their cells in association with the secretory process.

Carbon and energy sources for fatty acid biosynthesis in non-photosynthetic plastids of higher plants [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Non-photosynthetic plastids are the main sites of biosynthesis of a number of important plant products, including starch and oil. However, in contrast to chloroplasts, these plastids lack the ability to harvest light energy and to fix CO., via ...

The positional cloning and expression studies of the IMMUTANS variegation locus of Arabidopsis thaliana

open access: yes, 1999
immutans (im), a nuclear gene induced variegation mutation of Arabidopsis, causes green- and white-sectored leaves and is recessive. The green sectors contain cells with normal chloroplasts, whereas the white sectors are heteroplastidic and contain cells

Grana formation and synthesis of chloroplastic proteins induced by light in portions of etiolated leaves

open access: yes, 1954
A comparison between plastids from etiolated and green leaves with the electron microscope shows a radically different structure in these two types of particles. The leucoplasts do not contain grana; they show a finely granular structure.

Plastid stromules: video microscopy of their outgrowth, retraction, tensioning, anchoring, branching, bridging and tip-shedding

open access: yes, 2015
Stromules are stroma-containing tubules which can grow from the surface of plastids, most commonly leucoplasts and chromoplasts, but also chloroplasts in some tissues. Their functions are obscure. Stills from video rate movies are presented here.
