The Induction of Pulmonary Emphysema with Human Leukocyte Elastase
American Review of Respiratory Disease, 1977Abstract Purified human leukocyte elastase was injected into the tracheas of 46 hamsters. Thirteen animals died spontaneously within 1 week, with extensive lung hemorrhage. The elastin content of the lungs was only slightly less than control values 3 hours after injection.

Proteolysis of Gelatin-Bound Fibronectin by Activated Leukocytes: A Role for Leukocyte Elastase
Journal of Leukocyte Biology, 1991Abstract Fragmentation of subendothelial matrix-bound fibronectin by proteases released from stimulated leukocytes has been implicated in lung vascular injury. We studied the degradation of fibronectin bound to denatured collagen by inflammatory polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL).

Plasma Leukocyte Elastase Concentration and Coronary Artery Disease
Angiology, 1998It has previously been shown that leukocyte elastase is involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Few studies have addressed the relation between leukocyte elastase concentrations and coronary artery disease (CAD). The authors investigated (1) the clinical significance of leukocyte elastase determi nation in the diagnosis of ...

Publisher Summary This chapter presents the procedure for purification and assaying of leukocyte elastase. Leukocytes for use as starting material in the purification of leukocyte elastase are most conveniently obtained by leukapheresis of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia, or normal donors.

New phytoweapons to curb leukocyte elastase
Drugs of the Future, 2006This review does not presume to be exhaustive in the field of leukocyte elastase inhibitors. Instead, a general picture will be sketched to give the reader a brief update and encourage advances in this continuously growing sector of pharmacology, drug discovery and drug design.

Human leukocyte elastase and cystic fibrosis
2003Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal disease caused by a single gene defect in Europe and North America (Davis et al 1996; Rosenstein and Cutting, 1998). The defective gene was identified in 1989 by a team of investigators under the direction of Drs. Lap-Chee Tsui, John Riordan and Francis Collins (Kerem et al 1989; Riordan et al 1989; Rommens

This article reviews some properties of human leucocyte elastase. This 30 kDa glycoprotein formed of 218 amino acid residues, is a serine proteinase which cleaves proteins at Val-X, Ala-X, Leu-X or Met-X bonds. Leucocyte elastase solubilizes fibrous elastin and also degrades other extracellular matrix proteins. It hydrolyses and inactivates a number of
