Molecular-dynamics simulation of clustering processes in sea-ice floes

open access: yes, 2011
In seasonally ice-covered seas and along the margins of perennial ice pack, i.e. in regions with medium ice concentrations, the ice cover typically consists of separate floes interacting with each other by inelastic collisions.

'Calving laws', 'sliding laws' and the stability of tidewater glaciers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
A new calving criterion is introduced, which predicts calving where the depth of surface crevasses equals ice height above sea level. Crevasse depth is calculated from strain rates, and terminus position and calving rate are therefore functions of ice ...

Coupled regional climate–ice-sheet simulation shows limited Greenland ice loss during the Eemian [PDF]

open access: yesClimate of the Past, 2013
During the last interglacial period (Eemian, 130–115 kyr BP) eustatic global sea level likely peaked at > 6 m above the present-day level, but estimates of the contribution of the Greenland Ice Sheet vary widely.

Intermittent structural weakening and acceleration of the Thwaites Glacier Tongue between 2000 and 2018 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Evolving conditions at the terminus of Thwaites Glacier will be important in determining the rate of its future sea-level contribution over the coming decades.

Wave interactions with circular ice ridge embedded in level ice

open access: yesCold Regions Science and Technology, 2018
Abstract The present study examines the wave interactions with a circular elastic body trapped within a thin cover of sea ice of substantial extent. This configuration is an idealization of an ice ridge embedded in a field of level ice. The ice cover and ice ridge are both modeled as thin elastic plates. Two independent approaches are used. The first

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Land Ice and Sea Level Rise: A Thirty-Year Perspective [PDF]

open access: yesOceanography, 2011
The present-day assessment of contributions to sea level rise from glaciers and ice sheets depends to a large degree on new technologies that allow efficient and precise detection of change in otherwise inaccessible polar regions.

Cool episodes in the Late Cretaceous - exploring the effects of physical forcing on Antarctic snow accumulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Until recently it was assumed that the major modern ice sheets on Antarctica became established around the Eocene-Oligocene boundary about 34 Ma ago. But new evidence (e.g.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...
