Life expectancy at birth in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: a systematic review and meta-analysis

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Epidemiology, 2020
Several studies indicate that prognosis for survival in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) has improved in recent decades. However, published evidence is inconclusive and some estimates may be obsolete due to improvements in standards of care, in ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Challenges for reducing inequities in health and healthcare for the 21st Century [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Human life expectancy during the time of the Roman Empire was approximately 28 years. In 1990, global life expectancy had increased to 65 years. The advances in life expectancy in the 20th century were remarkable by any standard.

Dynamics of life expectancy and life span equality

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2020
Significance Why life expectancy and life span equality have increased together is a question of scientific interest. Both measures are calculated for a calendar year and might not describe a cohort’s actual life course.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Trends in healthy working life expectancy and its difference by workload group among aged over 50 years: a longitudinal perspective

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health
OBJECTIVES: While extending working life is a key policy objective, its impact on population health is not fully understood. This study investigated the long-term effects of physical and psychological workloads as well as initial health-work status on ...

One vicinity, two neighbors, and two different stories: a comparison of mortality experiences in Greece and Bulgaria since the 1960s

open access: yesJournal of Balkan Studies
Greece and Bulgaria are neighboring countries. In the 19th century, the two countries became independent after the Greеk-Turkish and Russian-Turkish Wars, respectively.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

ICT penetration and life expectancy in emerging market economies: panel evidence from asymmetric causality analysis

open access: yesBMC Public Health
Background Life expectancy is a significant result indicator of public health and sustainable development. Therefore, one of the final objectives of all economic and social policies is to increase the life expectancy. In this context, a limited number of
