Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Global, Regional, and Country-Specific Lifetime Risks of Stroke, 1990 and 2016 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
BACKGROUND The lifetime risk of stroke has been calculated in a limited number of selected populations. We sought to estimate the lifetime risk of stroke at the regional, country, and global level using data from a comprehensive study of the prevalence ...

Bisphosphonate compliance in Japan from the perspective of product, formulation, and patient characteristics: analysis of medical insurance claim data

open access: yesJournal of Pharmaceutical Health Care and Sciences
Background Bisphosphonates are the mainstay drugs for osteoporosis, but in clinical practice, they are often ineffective due to low compliance. However, there have been few studies examining compliance on a product-by-product basis or in detail in Japan.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Persistence with topical glaucoma therapy in Japan from the perspective of product, formulation, and patient characteristics: analysis of medical insurance claim data

open access: yesBMC Ophthalmology
Background Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Japan and constitutes a serious public health challenge. Due to its asymptomatic onset and slow progression, patient persistence with topical glaucoma therapies remains low ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Trends in the lifetime risk of developing cancer in Great Britain: comparison of risk for those born from 1930 to 1960 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Background: Typically, lifetime risk is calculated by the period method using current risks at different ages. Here, we estimate the probability of being diagnosed with cancer for individuals born in a given year, by estimating future risks as the cohort

Instillation success rates among glaucoma eyedrop products: patient survey in Japan

open access: yesBMC Ophthalmology
Background Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in Japan and poses a significant public health challenge. Previous studies have reported low success rates for antiglaucoma eyedrop instillation.
