Comparative Study of Pleural Fluid-to-serum Bilirubin Ratio and Light’s Criteria in Differentiating Exudative from Transudative Pleural Effusion

open access: yesJournal of Applied Sciences and Clinical Practice
Introduction: Pleural effusion is a common diagnostic problem associated with significant morbidity. Its management mainly depends on the correct diagnosis of underlying disease.

Diagnostic utility of pleural fluid/serum bilirubin ratio versus light’s criteria in differentiating exudative and transudative pleural effusions. A cross-sectional observational study.

open access: yesStudent's Journal of Health Research Africa
Background Differentiation between exudative and transudative pleural effusions is fundamental for guiding clinical management. Light’s criteria remain the standard, though reports suggest misclassification in certain cases, necessitating exploration of

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Cut-off value of pleural fluid C-reactive protein in etiologic diagnosis of pleural fluid

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Chest Disease and Tuberculosis, 2014
Background: Classification of effusion into transudates or exudates is considered as the corner stone in the etiological diagnosis of pleural effusion.

Network divergence analysis identifies adaptive gene modules and two orthogonal vulnerability axes in pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumors contain diverse cellular states whose behavior is shaped by context‐dependent gene coordination. By comparing gene–gene relationships across biological contexts, we identify adaptive transcriptional modules that reorganize into distinct vulnerability axes.

Hepatic Hydrothorax without Apparent Ascites and Dyspnea - A Case Report [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, 2018
A 78-year-old female with a past medical history of alcoholic cirrhosis was hospitalised with recurrent lower gastrointestinal bleeding due to rectal ulcers. The ulcers were successfully treated with cautery and placement of clips.

EDNRB‐dependent endothelin signaling reduces proliferation and promotes proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition in gliomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Glioma cells mainly express the endothelin receptor EDNRB, while EDNRA is restricted to a perivascular tumor subpopulation. Endothelin signaling reduces glioma cell proliferation while promoting migration and a proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition associated with poor prognosis. This pathway activates Ca2+, K+, ERK, and STAT3 signalings and is regulated

Engineered extracellular vesicles enriched with the miR‐214/199a cluster enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the miR‐214/199a cluster is associated with recurrence in ovarian cancer. Engineered small extracellular vesicles (m214‐sEVs) elevate miR‐214‐3p/miR‐199a‐5p in tumor cells, suppress β‐catenin, TLR4, and YKT6 signaling, reprogram tumor‐derived sEV cargo, reduce chemoresistance and migration, and enhance carboplatin efficacy and survival in ...

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.

Revisiting Light's criteria: a validated blood-free triple combination matches diagnostic accuracy in over 7000 patients

open access: yesERJ Open Research
Background Light's criteria remain the standard for distinguishing exudative from transudative pleural effusions, but require serum sampling and lack specificity.
