Ethogram of Limulus polyphemus [PDF]

open access: yesAnimal Behavior and Cognition
Developing an understanding of how organisms interact with their environment is crucial in creating best management practices in managed-care settings and improving conservation efforts.

Identification of putative circadian clock genes in the American horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus. [PDF]

open access: yesComp Biochem Physiol Part D Genomics Proteomics, 2016
While the American horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, has robust circadian and circatidal rhythms, virtually nothing is known about the molecular basis of these rhythms in this species or any other chelicerate.

Zoothamnium duplicatum infestation of cultured horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
An outbreak of the sessile peritrich Zoothamnium duplicatum in a pilot, commercial-scale Limulus polyphemus hatchery resulted in the loss of ∼ 96% (40,000) second/third instar larvae over a 61 day period.

Wiring a periscope--ocelli, retinula axons, visual neuropils and the ancestrality of sea spiders. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The Pycnogonida or sea spiders are cryptic, eight-legged arthropods with four median ocelli in a 'periscope' or eye tubercle. In older attempts at reconstructing phylogeny they were Arthropoda incertae sedis, but recent molecular trees placed them as the

The potential functions of mechanoreceptors found on trilobite larva of Limulus polyphemus (Linnaeus, 1758) [PDF]

open access: yesArthropods, 2022
In this study trilobite larvae and early juvenile stages of Limulus polyphemus (Linnaeus, 1758) are examined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy to examine the mechanoreceptors present on the cuticle.

Post-translational Protein Deimination Signatures and Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) in the Atlantic Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The horseshoe crab is a living fossil and a species of marine arthropod with unusual immune system properties which are also exploited commercially.

Agglutination of Blood Cells in Limulus polyphemus.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1957
SummaryStable cell suspensions were prepared from Limulus blood using 0.05-0.10% formaldehyde. Washed cells could be agglutinated by as little as 0.01 volume of fresh homologous plasma. The initial stages of this reaction showed moderate concentration dependence and very strong temperature dependence.

The Long-Term Effect of Bleeding for Limulus Amebocyte Lysate on Annual Survival and Recapture of Tagged Horseshoe Crabs

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
In the U.S., 525,000 horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) per year have been captured during 2013–2017, brought to biomedical facilities, and bled to produce Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL), then mostly released to the area of capture. The Atlantic States

Capture of lipopolysaccharide (endotoxin) by the blood clot: a comparative study. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
In vertebrates and arthropods, blood clotting involves the establishment of a plug of aggregated thrombocytes (the cellular clot) and an extracellular fibrillar clot formed by the polymerization of the structural protein of the clot, which is fibrin in ...
