The Linearized Collision Operator
1969In Chapter II we found a solution of the Boltzmann equation, i.e., the Maxwellian. It is an exact solution of the Boltzmann equation and practically the only known exact solution [another solution is due to Ikenberry and Truesdell (see ref. 1) but is interesting only for illustrative purposes].

In chapter 3 we establish some basic concepts on linear operators in Banach spaces. The results developed include spectral analysis for bounded and unbounded self-adjoint operators.

Semigroups of Linear Operators
1971In this chapter we present an introductory treatment of the theory of semigroups of linear operators over a Hilbert space, emphasizing those aspects which are of importance in applications. As a rule we shall not strive for generality and instead shall dwell on special classes of semigroups such as compact semigroups and Hilbert-Schmidt semigroups ...

In this chapter the study of linear mappings between normed linear spaces is begun, with the emphasis being on the case of bounded linear mappings on a Hilbert space. A number of specific examples are given and studied in detail. In the case of a bounded linear mapping on a Hilbert space, the adjoint operator is motivated and defined.
