Formation and Characterization of Supported Lipid Bilayers Composed of Hydrogenated and Deuterated Escherichia coli Lipids.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Supported lipid bilayers are widely used for sensing and deciphering biomolecular interactions with model cell membranes. In this paper, we present a method to form supported lipid bilayers from total lipid extracts of Escherichia coli by vesicle fusion.

Orientation of Laurdan in Phospholipid Bilayers Influences Its Fluorescence: Quantum Mechanics and Classical Molecular Dynamics Study

open access: yesMolecules, 2018
Fluidity of lipid membranes is known to play an important role in the functioning of living organisms. The fluorescent probe Laurdan embedded in a lipid membrane is typically used to assess the fluidity state of lipid bilayers by utilizing the ...

Probing the interaction between nanoparticles and lipid membranes by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring

open access: yesFrontiers in Chemistry, 2016
There is increasing interest in using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) to investigate the interaction of nanoparticles (NPs) with model surfaces.

Bilayer Edges Catalyze Supported Lipid Bilayer Formation [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2010
Supported lipid bilayers (SLB) are important for the study of membrane-based phenomena and as coatings for biosensors. Nevertheless, there is a fundamental lack of understanding of the process by which they form from vesicles in solution. We report insights into the mechanism of SLB formation by vesicle adsorption using temperature-controlled time ...

Volumetric stability of lipid bilayers [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Chemistry Chemical Physics, 2012
In agreement with recent reports, a commercial densimeter has yielded a gradual decrease in lipid molecular volume of DPPC multilamellar vesicle dispersions in the gel phase upon repeated thermal cycling between 10 °C and 50 °C. The considerable size of this decrease would have significant implications for the physical chemistry of biomembranes.

Water permeation through stratum corneum lipid bilayers from atomistic simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin, consists of keratin filled rigid non-viable corneocyte cells surrounded by multilayers of lipids. The lipid layer is responsible for the barrier properties of the skin.

Sphingomyelin and GM1 Influence Huntingtin Binding to, Disruption of, and Aggregation on Lipid Membranes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disease caused by the expansion beyond a critical threshold of a polyglutamine (polyQ) tract near the N-terminus of the huntingtin (htt) protein. Expanded polyQ promotes the formation of a variety

Composition Fluctuations in Lipid Bilayers [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2016
AbstractLipid bilayers constitute the basis of biological membranes. Understanding lipid mixing and phase behavior can provide important insights into membrane lateral organization (the “raft” hypothesis). Here we investigate model lipid bilayers below and above their miscibility transition temperatures.

How Well Can You Tailor the Charge of Lipid Vesicles? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Knowledge and control of surface charge or potential is important for tailoring colloidal interactions. In this work, we compare widely used zeta potential (ζ) measurements of charged lipid vesicle surface potential to direct measurements using the ...

Evidence for the Formation of Symmetric and Asymmetric DLPC-DAPC Lipid Bilayer Domains

open access: yesCellular Physiology and Biochemistry, 2013
Background/Aims: We investigated if mixtures of the phosphatidylcholine (PC) lipids 1,2-dilauroyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (C12:0 PC; DLPC) and 1,2-diarachidoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (C20:0 PC; DAPC), which differ by eight methylene groups in ...
