Chronic aspiration in children: Evaluation of the lipid-laden macrophage index

Pediatric Pulmonology, 1999
Chronic pulmonary aspiration (CPA) causes significant morbidity, but is underdiagnosed because of difficulties in establishing a diagnosis. The lipid-laden macrophage index (LLMI) is said to differentiate between those with and without CPA. Records of 113 patients were reviewed to determine specificity and sensitivity of the LLMI for CPA.

Utilization of lipid‐laden macrophage index in evaluation of aerodigestive disorders

The Laryngoscope, 2011
AbstractObjectives/Hypothesis:The utility of the lipid‐laden macrophage index (LLMI) in the evaluation of airway inflammatory processes remains controversial. There is a paucity of normative data in both pediatric and adult populations, and there is wide variability in the reported cases.

Lipid-Laden Macrophages in Tracheal Aspirates of Newborn Infants Receiving Intravenous Lipid Infusions: A Cytologic Study

Pediatric Pathology, 1984
Seventy-four neonates with respiratory distress syndrome had cytologic study of tracheal aspirates. Thirteen, all of whom were receiving intravenous lipid and nothing orally had abundant macrophages with foamy cytoplasm, positive for intracytoplasmic lipid by Sudan black stain, in the tracheal aspiration specimens.

Inhibitory Effects of Procyanidin B2 Dimer on Lipid-laden Macrophage Formation

Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology, 2006
A proteomic analysis of procyanidin B(2) isolated from cocoa against oxidized low-density lipoprotein-induced lipid-laden macrophage formation was performed. Of approximately 400 detected proteins, 12 were differentially expressed as a result of B(2) treatment.

Lipid-laden macrophages in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid as a marker for pulmonary aspiration

Pediatric Pulmonology, 1999
An increased lipid content in alveolar macrophages of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid is thought to be a useful indicator for recurrent pulmonary aspiration. To assess whether pulmonary diseases unrelated to aspiration can raise the lipid content in alveolar macrophages, we evaluated Oil-Red-O-stained smears of BAL fluid in 18 children aged 3-15 ...

Lipid-laden alveolar macrophages (LLAM): A useful marker of silent aspiration in children

Pediatric Pulmonology, 1999
At present there is no test available which identifies children suffering from silent aspiration due to gastroesophageal reflux (GER). The purpose of this study was to determine whether lipid-laden alveolar macrophage (LLAM) scoring is a useful method to arrive at the diagnosis.

Increased laryngeal lavage lipid‐laden macrophage index during acute bronchiolitis

Acta Paediatrica, 2007
Abstract Aim: To investigate aspiration risks associated with bronchiolitis in infants using the lipid‐laden macrophage index (LLMI) from laryngeal lavages. Methods: Laryngeal lavages from 29 infants with acute bronchiolitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus were evaluated (acute stage).

Inhibitory effects of luteolin on transendothelial migration of monocytes and formation of lipid-laden macrophages

Nutrition, 2012
Because of an initial activation of proinflammatory cytokines that facilitates leukocyte transmigration, atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease and its severity is accelerated by the occurrence of complex interactions of oxidatively modified low-density lipoprotein (LDL) with monocyte-derived macrophages. The present study investigated ...

Cutoff value of lipid‐laden alveolar macrophages for diagnosing aspiration in infants and children

Pediatric Pulmonology, 2007
AbstractChronic passage of gastric and/or alimentary material into the airways is a frequent and difficult‐to‐diagnose condition. Because alveolar macrophages phagocytose aspirated material, it has been suggested that their identification is a useful diagnostic method.

Role of Ro60/RNYs complex in lipid-laden macrophages
