Phylogenomics and analysis of shared genes suggest a single transition to mutualism in Wolbachia of nematodes [PDF]
Wolbachia, endosymbiotic bacteria of the order Rickettsiales, are widespread in arthropods but also present in nematodes. In arthropods, A and B supergroup Wolbachia are generally associated with distortion of host reproduction.

Glucose and pyruvate catabolism inLitomosoides carinii [PDF]
SummaryThe filarial wormLitomosoides cariniishowed a rapid uptake of glucose duringin vitroincubation. This uptake proceeded linearly with time, and was significantly higher under aerobic compared to anoxic conditions. Under an atmosphere of nitrogen the worms converted glucose almost quantitatively to lactate, whereas in the presence of oxygen ...

Microfilariae Trigger Eosinophil Extracellular DNA Traps in a Dectin-1-Dependent Manner
Summary: Eosinophils mediate protection against filarial nematodes. Our results demonstrate that eosinophil extracellular traps (EETosis) are induced by microfilariae and infective L3 larvae of Litomosoides sigmodontis.

Dose-Dependent Prophylactic Efficacy of Filarial Antigens Glutathione-S-Transferase and Abundant Larval Transcript-2 against Brugia malayi Challenge in Mastomys. [PDF]
Objective. To identify the most effective dose of filarial rBmALT‐2 and rWbGST alone or in combination against B. malayi infection in vitro and in vivo. Methods. Mastomys (n = 5–7/group) received intramuscular (i.m.) injection with three different doses (25, 50, and 100 μg) of rBmALT‐2 or rWbGST, either alone or in combination with alum as the adjuvant.

Regulatory T‐cells in helminth infection: induction, function and therapeutic potential
Helminth parasites successfully colonize many niches in the body, and potently manipulate the regulatory T‐cell network in each environment. In particular, qualitative changes to activation markers and increased suppressive function accompany a numerical expansion in both natural and induced Tregs that prolong infection and dampen responses to ...

Development of Onchocerca volvulus in humanized NSG mice and detection of parasite biomarkers in urine and serum. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: The study of Onchocerca volvulus has been limited by its host range, with only humans and non-human primates shown to be susceptible to the full life cycle infection.
