Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Live algal feed and their culture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Live feed algae are the microscopic plant life of any water body which forms the primary producers in an aquatic ecosystem. They form the basic live feed to all the zooplankters and larval forms of fin fishes and shell fishes.

Assessing the Effects of Rotifer Feed Enrichments on Turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) Larvae and Post-Larvae Gut-Associated Bacterial Communities

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2023
Live feed enrichments are often used in fish larvicultures as an optimized source of essential nutrients to improve larval growth and survival. In addition to this, they may also play an important role in structuring larval-associated microbial ...

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Nutrient/TOR signaling controls adipose mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) to regulate organismal growth in Drosophila

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Animals must match their growth rate to available nutrients. We show that in Drosophila larvae, the nutrient‐sensing TOR kinase controls growth by regulating levels of TFAM, a key regulator of mitochondrial function, in the adipose tissue. When nutrients are abundant, high TOR activity suppresses TFAM, lowering mitochondrial bioenergetic activity and ...

Optimization of Artemia Feed Regimes for Larval Giant Kōkopu (Galaxias argenteus)

open access: yesFishes, 2023
Optimizing the initial live feed is critical to success in fish larviculture in terms of both larval health and productivity. It is also vitally important due to the significant cost of provisioning live feeds.

Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

Micro algae culture as live feed [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The early life stages of every cultivable organism in a hatchery system depend on the feed provided. Micro algae form the basic food for all the larval stages of crustaceans, molluscs, sea cucumber and finfishes.

Influence of the frequency of addition of Navicula sp. in a biofloc system on the growth of Penaeus vannamei post-larvae and the planktonic community

open access: yesSpanish Journal of Agricultural Research
Aim of study: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different addition frequencies of the microalga Navicula sp. in a biofloc system on the growth performance of Penaeus vannamei post-larvae and the planktonic community.
