Methylation and liver cancer

Clinics and Research in Hepatology and Gastroenterology, 2013
Cancer evolution at all stages (including initiation, progression and invasion) is driven by both epigenetic abnormalities and genetic alterations. Epigenetics refer to any structural modification of genomic regions, which lead to modification in gene expression without alterations in DNA sequence.

Liver regeneration, liver cancers and cyclins

Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, 1998
Accumulating evidence has revealed that malignant cell growth is regulated by complex mechanisms involved in genetic and epigenetic factors. Among human cancers, cancer in the liver (hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)) is characterized by the evidence that it is usually based on chronic liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis, in which ...

Liver transplantation for liver cancer

World Journal of Surgery, 1982
AbstractResults in the first 100 orthotopic liver allografts performed in the Cambridge‐King's College Hospital series (1968–1980) are reported. Twenty‐two patients survived beyond a year (age range, 16–59 years). Of these, 12 were cirrhotics and 10 were primary malignancies. Of the cirrhotics, 10 are alive, with the 2 deaths resulting from cholangitis.

Cancers Metastatic to the Liver

Surgical Clinics of North America, 2020
The liver is a common site of metastatic cancer spread, and metastatic lesions are the most common malignant liver tumors. Diagnosis of liver metastases often is established based on clinical assessment, laboratory tests, and appropriate imaging. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice for resectable colorectal and neuroendocrine liver metastases.

Cryoablation for Liver Cancer

Techniques in Vascular and Interventional Radiology, 2007
Primary cancer of the liver (hepatocellular carcinoma [HCC]) and metastatic cancer to the liver from a distant primary site of origin are very common problems in the United States and the world. The management of these diseases has become progressively complex as the available treatment options have improved and propagated.

Alcohol and liver cancer

Alcohol, 2005
Hepatocellular carcinoma is the eighth most frequent cancer in the world, accounting for approximately 500,000 deaths per year. Unlike many malignancies, hepatocellular carcinoma occurs predominantly within the context of known risk factors, with hepatic cirrhosis being the most common precursor to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Primary liver cancers

Current Opinion in Oncology, 1995
A review of the recent literature about liver cancers shows the increasing role of hepatitis C as a risk factor for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. A new discussion has arisen with regard to the association between the use of oral contraceptives and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Cryosurgery of liver cancer

Seminars in Surgical Oncology, 1993
AbstractCryosurgery, the in situ destruction of tissue using subzero temperatures, has been used to treat hepatic metastases. Because it is a focal treatment, cryosurgery can be used in patients with unresectable lesions due to location (next to major blood vessels) or multiplicity.

Liver Cancer and Alcohol

Clinics in Liver Disease, 2012
Annually, hepatocellular carcinoma is diagnosed in approximately a half-million people worldwide. Based on the association of alcohol with cancer, a International Agency for Research on Cancer working group recently deemed alcoholic beverages "carcinogenic to humans," causally related to occurrence of malignant tumors of the oral cavity, pharynx ...

Small liver cancer

The Japanese Journal of Surgery, 1983
We report eight cirrhotic patients with liver cancer of less than 2 cm in diameter, and who were successfully treated by surgery. The sensitivities of diagnostic procedures for small lesions showed that alpha-feto-protein (AFP) was 75 per cent, radionuclide scanning 25 per cent, CT 33 per cent, ultrasonography 40 per cent and angiography 88 per cent ...
